xpsp3res.dll

While browsing through the system folder, I found a very interesting file called xpsp3res.dll. Here's some information about the DLL.

Quote

xpsp3res.dll (Service Pack 3 Messages) is a component from the software Microsoft® Windows® Operating System version 5.1.2586 by Microsoft Corporation. xpsp3res.dll version 5.1.2586 has a file size of 2,048 bytes, and is most commonly found under the directory "$NtUninstallKB890046$" with a creation date of September 7, 2005. This is not a known spyware, adware, or trojan component. Microsoft Windows is the most widely used PC operating system.

Besides the obvious LOL from this description, this is the absolute proof we've all been waiting for. There will indeed be an XP SP3! (The only little old question is, when? :D)

On a side note, which DLL contains the Windows Security Center?

Only Microsoft knows what's going to go into xpsp3res.dll :lick:

As for security center, you're looking for xpsp2res.dll and wscui.cpl.

No, but it's already there. And it contains only one (1) icon:

First off, I'm definitely NOT pinning this topic as it's hardly worthwhile.

Also, there's no doubt there will be an SP3. It's been brought up several times over now, but the (exact) timeframe is still up-in-the-air.

Plus, any hotfix released after SP2 is identified as pre-SP3 and could have included such a placeholder DLL.

In addition, your description is quite lacking and you would be better off referring to the instance in system32.

Finally, the icon suggests its related to WMP and downloading online music.

@ahanix1989: Ah yes, there you go then.

I tried to hunt it down some last night, but I wasn't coming across it. However, I also have the tasks pane disabled, so that explains why I wouldn't have seen it. ;)

Yes, I do a LOT of icon replacing in Windows XP (Interestingly enough, if I even THINK about touching the icons in user32.dll, it completely breaks the cd.

pffft! Been there, done that! Try manually replacing the icons in shell32.dll. Now that's fun.

BTW, I have hacked and replaced more than 95% of the user icons in my windows installation with Gant 3 icons.

Dude. I have replaced the icons in shell32.dll more times than you can imagine. I think it's that which made me suicidal. My "Icons" folder for icons to be put in is 325MB...

Now you can't tell me this isn't some pimp-ass modding skillz:

I dont care to be bothered by icon folders. My XPSP2 installation files are hacked to install my custom icons.

And no this has nothing to do with modding skills. It just requires a good knowledge of the inner layouts of the installation files. After that its a piece of cake to replace the resource within each file.

I, personally, think that after MSN Music was first introduced, post-SP2, they decided to start working on a SP3 DLL.

Or perhaps it's a placeholder for the future updates, as was suggested earlier? Because they already knew (Hell, we all knew) SP3 would exist. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a SP4
