before anyone asks, tries, or says anything:
no we don't know where to get it, no you can't post your link to it, no you can't tell me where to find it. on pain of... uh, eDeath.

You didn't mention the fact that any disc you use needs to be burned on dual layer media and be modified slightly in order to work. It's also still ENTIRELY likely that MS can either detect it on your box and blacklist your from Live (a BAD thing on the 360, whose features are heavily reliant on the service) or just revert the flash back via the onboard firmware management system that the 360 has.
Plus, hose this up and you've got a very expensive doorstop, as always. These sorts of mods are NOT for N00bs.

Hitachi/LG Mod is coming out in the next few days. It's a straight forward mod, but if you have NO experience in flashing drives, then DON'T attempt it. It'll HOSE your Xbox. And no you can just throw in another DVD drive, because your key on the dvd drive has to match the key on the mobo, if they don't match, nothing works.
*Waits patiently for the hitachi firmware... bought a 360 core system for 250 bucks (2 controllers, 1 wireless as well). Woo.

xtreme.bat automatically makes a backup of your dvd drive firmware called orig.bin.
Plug SATA cable from DVD drive to PC. Power cable drive still connected to Xbox 360
Ensure Hitachi drive is in mode b either by two wire trick or slax linux boot cd
Go to Windows
Run xtreme.bat batch file from a dos prompt specifing drive letter eg "xtreme.bat g"
All done!
Run restore.bat to revert to original firmware eg "restore.bat g"
Thanks to everyone at Xboxhacker.net for all their discussions. Thanks go to Seventhson for flashsec and memdump and Loser for firmcrypt, without these tools this would not be possible.
Hitachi drive seems to be less tolerant of dual layer media. Try a few times to boot a backup.
Firmware for 46 version will be released soon but I cannot test it. Code is offset slightly throughout the firmware.

I "backed up" Fight Night Round 3 last night, going to do the mod tonight on the drive, i don't have Serial ATA, so I have to borrow a PC from my friend for 10 mins. It's straight forward.

Still too much of a pain for most, due to the need for DL discs and burning the security sectors properly. Real mod cips are coming....

SS's are already patched into all the games that you can download. Plus all the SS patches are available online. I downloaded every single one.
Dual layer discs are the problem though, $$$.
The onyl mod chip that is out now is the dual firmware mod (and variations of it). It's going to be awhile before anything else is found I think...

It's unconfirmed at this point, but the hole needed for a real mod has supposedly been found already by the Devil360 folks. We'll see if it pans out.

Oh cool, haven't read anything on that yet, I know they did the dual firmware thing though. I've been checking xbox scene frequently lol. Haven't modded my drive yet, decided to hold off for a bit, something better may come out and i found my own PCI SATA card (Silicon Image chipset) for 42 bucks, put it on hold until next week. I'd rather do everything on my own comp.
Illrigger, do you have a 360?

Nope, not yet. It's on the list, but money isn't available.
The FW mod and the system mod are actually done by different groups, they just both used the same name, thinking themselves clever by both announcing on 6/6/06

Ah the mod isn't out yet that's why i got it confused and stuff :S. Yeah upograding the hard drive would be nice, since it's only 20gb, which most is used for backwards compatibility and games saves, rip a couple cds and it's filled/download game demos. I don't have the hdd yet, i got the core system for 250 bucks, with an extra controller. Just borrowed some games to play from my sister's bf to play until next week. I'm in the same boat anout the $, damn car and it's breakingness.
That devil360 thing looks cool, I don't expect it anytime soon though :S.
