Pretty reasonable prices (for the average type-chat user)...

I wonder if you can upgrade from a previous home edition to a professional edition, or can you go from a corp edition to a pro home edition...

The only problem with updates is that I like to have a clean install, not an upgrade of an OS

Gizmodo screwed up, the prices were Canadian, and they just used a convertor, which isn't how MS prices things there. Ed Bott's Blog has a more reasonable assessment of probably US prices, based off how XP prices vary in Canada vs the US:

Quote

Windows Vista Ultimate $349/$199

Windows Vista Business $269/179

Windows Vista Home Premium $239/$139

Windows Vista Home Basic $199/$99

That means that Vista and XP pricing will be more or less identical - as expected. The exceptions are Home Premium and Ultimate. Home premium is the MCE version and never had a retail version in XP. It does cost $40 more than Home Basic, which is the same differential as XP Home OEM and XP MCE OEM had. Ultimate, well, they could pretty much name their price because it's target audiance is us idiot enthusuasts who will pay anything to get the best.

Nice. When can I preorder? :)

And I still am wondering how they are going to handle x64. Is it going to be a separate DVD bundled in the same box?

From all indications, OEMs will be selling Basic, Premium or Business, as appropriate to the PC you're buying - most PCs will ship with Basic (with an option for Premium if it wll run it), high-end, Media Center and Tablet PCs wth Premium, and business PCs with Business. You can, however do a step-upgrade from within Vista to any higher version (except Enterprise, wihich will be VLK only), so no matter what version you start with you can get to Ultimate by paying an upgrade fee and sticking your DVD in. Pricing on doing so hasn't been announced.

Personally, I think I'm sticking with XP. It does everything I need. My desktop at home is not juiced enough for Vista, and I don't think I'd really need alot of the flashy new looks.

Maybe if I upgrade my hardware, I'll get vista through work..but we'll see.

Ditto to that. Bring on XPSP3 :lick: Hopefully I'll get Vista through college.

Esc, you should know better - MS OSes don't go on sale, they do rebate bundles! You'll pay full price for Vista, but get some AV solution and/or other software for free after rebate.

Here's an interesting concept - remember when XP and 95 launched they had "Plus packs" available on the same day, usually for $50? Well, Look at the Ultimate upgrade price vs Premium's. Ultimate is Windows Vista Home Premium with the Plus Pack! IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!!!

Hopefully that'll be somewhat cheaper. Thanks for the info.
