I found an article here - http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-5274626.html - so if anyone has anything to add that would be great!!!

I don't own a laptop, but from what I've heard from a few people. There's a few people in metro/vacation areas that host their own WiFi network and you pay so much a week for the WEP key to gain access, it'll usually cover at least the city. If you wanted to, and have the extra $$$ and some know-how, you could hook up an antenna on your house and have it go into your WiFi router and have it cover a few miles or so if you're interested in just using it in town.

i think he means wireless internet as in not a lan, but something like this

personally, I DONT suggest getting wireless internet. you wont need it anyways.

Netstumbler + wireless card + windows xp sp2 + time = free internet in the city...

check out verizon

you could use your phone as a USB modem or get that wireless card.

using your phone as a modem will cost you only minutes and runs at 128Kb.
the wireless web is whole other monthly service that runs about 3Mb.

heres a link for the wireless broadband:

it's expensive so I'd just go with the USB modem

don't forget to check the coverage map!

Verizon is the better option. It uses a wireless card, so you don't waist cell minutes, and you can get close to broadband speeds. wink2.gif

verizon does have a pc card for broadband access, but i've been fine with just hooking up my cellphone to my computer and using that. Free night/weekend so if i use it then, it dosent use my minutes! speed isn't bad considering either

One thing that I know is possible... I can connect my cell phone to my laptop (using a data cable), and have the phone call #777... and have the laptop dial a dialup ISP through the phone. My cell phone (Kyocera SoHo/KX1) can effectively be used as a 110Kbps dialup modem, usable wherever I have a service plan smile.gif

I can't test it, however, because I don't have a dialup service
Scott
That also would cost per minute probably on the phone plan. :/

Someone I know has a wireless card that works anywhere. It's real slow (like less than a modem speed). I think it's Verizon... not sure though.

The card for the labtop is $200 and the service is $80 /month. ohmy.gif

My roommate that is a realator has the verizon service... and he told me it cuts out quite a bit... and that for the $80 a month... unless you absolutely need internet everywhere you go... then it is not worth the cost...

Sprint has a service like this as well. It costs the same, but I've heard the service is less spotty. There are also less expensive plans, but they have monthly bandwidth limitations, and the overage fees are INSANE, so most people just pay the $80 and live with it.

I'll repeat everyone else's advice: if you don't NEED this service for a job (realtor, building contractor, salesman, etc), don't bother. It's slow and horribly expensive for what you get.

I would love to know how you do this because I wanted to send a fax through my cell phone the other day and I already have my desktop setup to use my cell phone using the #777 thing for when my ISP does serviceing and their network goes down. but the internet connection that I set up to do this has me dial #777 and then enter web/web for the username/password [sprint] and then I am on the internet.

If you're saying that you could dial someone else's DUN ISP then how would you dial that ISP? Would you dial it before or after you entered web/web?

Would I have my fax software dial #777,4045551234 to send a fax?
