There is a good reason for AIDS not being cured and that's because the pathogen doesn't respond to our anti-viral treatments.
It is unrealistic to think a sexually transmitted disease like this can be eradicted socially but yes I agree with you the Catholic Church has some role to play in the high rates of infection we see in Africa. That said, they don't ban contraceptives because it's a disease that statistically affects homosexuals more - indeed there is a higher prevalence in heterosexuals than homosexuals in Africa - but to encourage fidelity and, for the very conservative, because they believe contraception is a form of abortion.
Playing around with genetics has always been a huge moral issue in the field of science without any influence from the religious sector. We can screen your embryos for the most common and well-defined genetic illnesses and reject the bad ones but this by no means rules out any other conditions without even contemplating if it is right if some people are born "superior".
