Full Version: Geek Squad?

I have very little experience, not enough to get my foot in the door with a decent entry level job. I currently have a somewhat entry level IT job that I HATE. I am considering applying for Geek Squad, but I am unsure that time there would be considered crediable experience by another company. In the IT world is Geek Squad considered a joke? Here is the information that I have found (there is more listed but not available in my area).

Geek Squad titles:
C.I.A.(Counter Intelligence Agent): Part and Full-time - C.I.A.'s perform computer service and create loyal customers in our Best Buy and Geek Squad Stores.

DOUBLE AGENT: Part and Full-time - Agent must develop customers as they perform on-site repairs, setups and networking, both in homes and businesses, and will assist customers in Best Buy when not on-site. This very responsible person is provided a "Geekmobile" and a parts inventory. Excellent driving record required.

SPECIAL AGENT: Part and Full-time – set up server systems, networks, wireless hardware, routers, and routine maintenance on office IT systems.

DEPUTY COUNTER INTELLIGENCE: Full-time – supervise the activities on the daily operations. Must be A+ Certified. Only available in Geek Squad Precincts in Best Buy.

Please give me your honest opinon. huh.gif huh.gif

To sum it up, geeksquad has some things of their own, but their mostly with Best Buy.

You need alot of expierence to be with Geek Squad -- if you're going to work in best buy, people will bring you their computers that need to be taken apart and redone. If you go to houses privately, that's even harder as you don't have anybody else around.

I have some experience working in homes privately. Most of them quit calling me when I sent a notice that I was raising my labor rate from $10/hr to $15/hr. Some did call bitching about it and I tried explaining that I felt the increase was necessary because my off-time from my regular job was being taken an average of 3 nights a week and I didn't feel the compensation was adequate. But they didn't understand. Personally I still feel that my rate is pretty damn cheap! (considering my avg visit was around 1.25-hrs) I have a small amount of phone support (a few months) with a local company, and 2 yrs level 1 tech. in a mid-sized dept store (POS terminals, PC's, thin clients, printers, basic phone, etc)

I was also enrolled in a networking program at a local college, but I dropped when my curriculium was changed halfway into it and it would have taken me 4+ yrs to get an Associates degree (depending on course availablity.)

You are selling yourself short!!!- I did in home service for $22.50 an hr. when I was in High School... and now if I do a project then it is around $40 to $50 an hour.. you need to up your price!

The Geek Squad is a stupid entry level position. Sure, you need to know your stuff, just don't expect to work on anything that will challenge you in 6 months time. However, it is good experience to move on to a real job with.

Wow. I charge 30$/hour! So going from 10 to 15 is nothing.
ahanix1989
I charge whatever they feel is fair... call me a pussy, but sometimes it works. Reinstall Windows, I get $40. Add some RAM, $30
Jizzylax
geek squad charges like 40 bucks to install a video card is all i know about them. 40 bucks!! takes 2 minutes!

i could do all their shit without any certifications and crap.
Xenokira
on average I charge $25-$35 an hour. About two weeks ago, I was paid $150 to put a computer together and install Windows--easy money biggrin.gif

As far as the GeekSquad goes...I applied there in August and was actually called back for 2 out of the 3-4 interviews. The first interview went great, it was with the GeekSquad manager at that Best Buy. The second interview was terrible. This one was with one of the Best Buy managers and the guy was a self-admiring asshole...the "Holier than thou" type.
From people I know that have worked at Best Buy, there's a lot of people like that there...I guess I don't know that there's a lot for myself, but that's what I've been told.

So since non of the replies have really said this I am assuming that GS isn't considered a joke in the IT world. (like some companies can are)
