Full Version: Are you a Hardware or Software person?

I myself am a software person, I can pretty much doing anything when it comes to software. I can talk to someone over the phone and navigate him or her through control panel, to get to a particular function. Just the other day a friend ask me about this file which had .vcx extension, and within 10 mins I found program for him to open it with. So yeah when it comes to software I’m a A* - obviously it's not soley based on that, but overall experience with computers.

As for hardware I’m totally useless, seriously I don’t even know how to install a floppy drive.

Edit* Ok I did try to make a poll, I obviously didn't do it right so here are the options:
    • Hardware
    • Software
    • Both
youm0nt
hardware.
Jizzylax
a little of both... not an expert in either, but pretty proficient in both
Heart_Attack
Mostly both, but I prefer Software
Neil

most of the people you are talking to over the phone needing help are morons, making it even harder.

when that shit happens to me, it really all depends on my mood... they'll either get a "hahaha u have a shitty computer" or a "fuck this... *click*"

edit: oh yea, hardware mostly.

edit 2: oh god and dont even get me started on when they "have 40 gigs of 'memory'" noexpression.gif
Sinbad
Pretty proficient in both but I think I am able to diagnos hardware problems better then software problems, so I guess mostly hardware.

I enjoy hardware more as well.

Software. I know enough about hardware to build my own pc etc but i dont keep up with the latest tech and all that shit. I know my software much better. (/me is a linux nerd)

EDIT1: yay first post.
Quactaur
I prefer software, it's a lot cheaper, and is almost impossible to kill with static electricity (though a plasma globe can murder cds like nothing else biggrin.gif)
paulmer2003
plus its more readly avalible biggrin.gif...I never have money for hardware stuff...probally the reason i dont know it as well.

PIETER
I'm more of a software person.
DigitalDude2005
I guess a bit of both, I help if I can but don't really consider myself an expert either, so much I still dont know.

Give it time. That won't be far off.

As for me...

I'm a jack of all trades. I dabble in all of it.

Same for me...

Mostly hardware and all kinds of hardware including A/V hardware. I also do a lot of programming, coding and database warehousing at my work place. Work with SAS, SPSS, ASP.net, Java, DHtml, SQL and Sybase databases.
rjz
Both. Depends on the day and location.
Phonics Monkey
I'm adding a few catagories but... (in decending order)

Networking
Software
Programming
Hardware

...Or at least it should be that way, but as of late the programming is getting closer to the top.
Illrigger
5 years ago I'd have said hardware, but my job has changed my focus, so Software with a minor in hardware tongue.gif

Then again, I'm really more of a Jack-of-all-trades.
DarkJedi
i'm all hardware biggrin.gif but hardware reliies on software to work.
Admiral Freebee
Hardware, I love to work with new hardware! Especially motherboards, CPU's, videocards and soundcards.

Software is interesting too but things like programming don't appeal to me.
Foxconn
A little bit of both.
jako
both, more software than hardware, but i like to work with both. PCs are my hobby and sometimes i help to my friends.
