Full Version: Amp or reciever for installed home speakers

Recently my cousin moved into a house he's renting for a year. The landlord has speakers in all the rooms in the house, in the ceiling.
All the wires lead to his main room, where they are hooked into switches, split by left and right.
In total there are 7 rooms. 6 rooms are wired into 2 switch boxes, and 1 set of wires for the local room where the wires are.
Essentially, there are 3 sets of Left and Right wires that are to be powered by an amp.

Can I use a reciever, like from a sound system that has all the audio outputs, and only use the LR outputs, and connect each outputs to 3 sets of speakers?
Or do I need an amp of somekind that has multiple outputs?

my receiver has three settings where it offers speakers A, B and both. so, 4 outputs total. Ideally, you want three sets of output LRs. I'm not positive on exactly what you're asking, but I think the major 'problem' you'll run into is that you have to switch between three sets of speakers, essentially blocking off 4/7 (or 6/7) rooms at a time to speakers.
and to clarify, plugging all lefts and all rights into the respective outputs, three ins to one set of outs, is a bad idea.

Or you'd need power amplifiers.

My couysin doesn't have a reciever or anything. The boxes which split the sound to the rooms have switches on them, so he could easily turn off the rooms he doesnt want.

Thats a neat toy..but sadly, he's in california. I don't know that he'd be able to set it up himself. Plus he has speaker wire, not RCA..minor issue, but still.

I need a "best buy" type of solution, if that makes sense. (something I can purchase off the shelf).

But potterface gave me my answer..that 3 inputs to one output won't work well.

Frankly I don't see a problem with it (e.g. I've done worse) The switch boxes will determine what load is put on the outputs, not the number of wires connected.

High-end stereo equipment can be touchy in that reguard, low to mid range equipment on the other hand couldn't care less.

Hrm...maybe I'll just recommend a low end receiver. He doesn't have a home theater... just a tv and cd player. Maybe if he buys it with a dvd player built in, it shouldn't be an issue
