Hi guys, do you know why when I just start my computer, it can boot up till windows, but once windows start it only shows the desktop picture, nothings else.

No start menu, no desktop icons. I only can run task manager.

And the only solution to solve it is to End Task Explorer.exe and Run Explorer.exe again, then restart my computer, then everything will be back to normal, but the next day, the same thing will happen.

It was ok 3 days ago.

Any ideas?

Have you installed some alternative shell, and then removed it incorrectly?

Refer to this thread

nope, i did not install any other shell. I did not use 3rd party s/w to change the look of winxp.

well, first i recommend you run the system file checker. once you get your taskbar back up, goto start--> run and type "sfc /scannow"

make sure your windowsXP cd is in the drive, and it'll overwrite any system files it doesn't recognise with original windows ones. if that doesn't work, then:

system restore(don't tell you you don't know how to use this). restore your system to 3 or more days ago and see if it still happens. failing THAT, then:

repair install: boot from windows CD (or floppy if you cant)

select 'install windows', and it'll then detect that you have an intact windows install on the HD. it'll ask you if you wanna repair, and you say 'yes please, poota!'

it'll then go through the standard windows install procedure, but it'll just overwrite your old windows install, preserving your work/settings/apps in the process. well, some apps break but you can always reinstall. and thereyago.

i remember my explorer would hang and then i found out it was because my profile was corrupt. does it do this with any other accounts?

edit the system.ini or windows.ini file (can't remember which one), it will contain a string call something like this:

shell:

or

load:

and it should look like this:

shell: Explorer.exe

save this and restart your computer, it should fix everything. (hopefully, unless something is really f'd up)

edit: it's near the top of the file i think in like the forst 10-20 lines... smile.gif

Try disabling all/some boot-time loaders. One/Some of
em may be crashing explorer...
I recommend "startup control panel" ( google it smile.gif )

Good luck wink2.gif

I suspect it is this problem too. For soem reason, I cannot enabled auto protect, it will not work.

Anyway I have uninstalled it already. =D
