I have this problem too - but I have a SB AWE 64 (ISA) soundcard...

And W2K3 "hangs" after trying to enable sound...It shows as Enabled/Started in Services/Windows Audio, and it seems to have accepted my CD drivers, but W2K3 won't shut down...It hangs at a solid blue screen (Not the same blue as BSOD!)...

I also get a msg on startup that "a device or driver did not load"...

I followed this tip - file:///C:/Downloads/W2K3_workstation/Enabling%20sound%20on%20Windows%20Server%202003.html

I had to delete, re-format & re-install to get shutdown working again...

Any ideas??? (TIA!)

welp, like i last said, i do have working sound... but after many attemps to get the audigy "software" (the control panel, speaker setup tools) installed, they do install, but wont run, saying card not installed or driver is wrong. i tried reinstalling drivers and software many times, and the software just wont run. i think that is why 5.1 sound wont work, cuz i cant tell it i have 5 speakers in the speaker setup tool. changing the speaker setting in the windows sounds setup does nuthin at all (naver has in any os i've run). so if i can just get that tool to run i can tell it to run 5 speakers and i think everything would be ok. any ideas? does it just change a reg entry? thanx for the input.....

(I think this was directed at me...) huh.gif

Yes, I have Sound enabled in Services, as per the linked site, but even after enabling, and installing the SD AWE 64 CD drivers, I get no sound, and the O/S hangs (won't shutdown) and gives the msg described above...

...Maybe W2K3 just doesn't like ISA devices... tongue.gif

laugh.gif OK guys! got sum great news... i fixed it...!! everything works 100% with the audigy now, all apps, and 5.1 sound! for those with probs, i explain fix....

1st, sum backround on y i think i failed...

the 1st time i installed 2003, i just ran the updated web drivers install from creatives site... which got me basic sound. i then attempted to install the apps off the audigy cd... apps installed, but would not run.... i then uninstalled and reinstalled drivers and apps in all kinda different orders to try and fix... no luck... so finnaly decided to wipe os and reinstall all from scratch...

ok, so now with FRESH install of 2003, i 1st ran the audigy cd and had it put in all apps and drivers (old drvs by now mind u).. then let it reboot.. then made it back to desktop, and BAM its werkin great! i can change speaker types on fly now, and sound werks properly from each speaker... then i went a installed the latest driver pack update from creative, installed it, and still everything werks good. and i can change speakers now in windows sound options and it werks.

hope that helped.... biggrin.gif
