Hi all ...
My Quantum HDD has just crashed and took my work and documents along with it. I need a program that could recover my data from it. I tried Ontrack Easy Recovery 5 and 6 and only version 5 "recognizes" my hdd. But this program only works up to 20 GB (or that is my conclusion because it "reads" the disk but after that it give me an error and it only shows that it`s 20 gb in size)
Could someone tell me a program that I could use to acces my 30gb hdd? I have to say that the disk isn`t "seen" by windows. When I boot up my computer .. the bios shows me that i have a hdd connected but it tells me that is something wrong (Secondary HDD: fail). I tried many programs but only EasyRecovery 5 showed me that i have the damaged hdd connected.
Thanks
Have you tried Acronis Recovery Expert Pro?

Yes .. i`ve tried it right after u posted it here. It doesn`t work. The program seeks for unpartitioned space... but my damaged hdd isn`t recognized.

If your partitions are FAT then you could try SpinRite -

Go to
Runtime.org and try Get Data Back
Worked for me on both NTFS, and Fat 32

If your partition (s) were all NTFS, you can make a nice little bootable floppy from the site below. it can reAD ntfs partitions and then copy your files over to a Fat32 partition. Your file names suffer a little but you can recover everything with this little bad boy.
Hope this helps.

What i mean by crash ... well.. After about 1,5 years of moderate use, in one morning .. my hdd started to run really slow. At first i thought that it`s the OS`s fault. When i tried to reinstall windows .. it didn`t work, it couldn`t write to the disk. After a restart it worked .. but only for a few minutes and after that it all frozed. After another restart i didn`t had any access to the drive. I connected it as a slave drive and tried to get the data from it ... but i could only copy about 8Mb in 20 minutes or something like that. (really long time).
After that .. it started to make some starnge sounds .. and it just died.

spaceman... so if the HD doesnt no longer run.. what are you going to do.. to get the data back?
i mean.... would a new circuit board.. work for the HD?
just replace.. the boards.. and reconnect it in theory it would run again.. right?
what other options do you have

Some manufacturers have a data recovery option in the warranty that allows you to give them the hard drive and have them recover your missing data. Check your warranty. It still depends upon how bad the hard drive is screwed up. *if the data has been corrupted then I think you are SOL*.

well the fact of the matter here is that if the drive has mechanically failed, there is almost nothing that you can do at home to get your data back. There are advanced data recovery centers all over the place, but they cost an arm and a leg. The nice thing about data recovery centers though is, if they can't get your data, you pay nothing.

Nothing to worry about if you have bad luck with one of the data recovery software. There is another good software called
Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS . It can recover any volume of data from hard drive. Download the demo version from the site
http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm. Demo version will show you the recovered data. If you are satisfied with the result then buy the software and recover your lost data.
Best of Luck!

note: spinrite will work on any/all partition types, it reads the raw magnetic data (www.spinrite.com can explain it better than i can)
