i have an average comp running XP

xp 2500+
64mb vid
512mb ddr ram

but all of a sudden its lagging really bad and windows taskes for ever to load up , is there anyway of fixing this without a clean install of xp, since i done that a few months ago

any good programs to help stop this? because its gonna suck if i have to clean install every few months when it starts lagging

leave Taskmanager on and check at CPU Usage levels. If its constantly at 100% then check which process is using up the CPU usage. Then close it unless its explorer.exe then you mights have to re-install r wait for a more professional reply.

The install is a couple of months old? If I were in your shoes then I would just back up some things and reinstall.

I would check with msconfig

yes, check the services you are running, could be something from an app you are running...

Just check everything on the startup tab on MSCONFIG.

Start -> Run -> msconfig

Uncheck anything that you don't want starting up, such as MSN Messenger, Burning Programs, etc. This might speed it up a little.

It will spee dit up alot actually, because when a startup starts, it comes with its services, and services slow the computer, so when you end a startup , you end alot of services withit

System Restore - go back to before it started being slow. You probably installed something that caused it. Be sure you back up any important files youve made/gotten since the restore date.

yeah everything that i have checked in startup is needed eg firewall, cd emulation, file share, nortons etc.

with msn, how the hell do i get rid of that from start up 4 good? ive unchecked it so many times and it keeps replacing itself!

I recomend you do the following:
Reqirements: Autopatcher XP
Windows XP Professional
Norton Anti Virus 2004
Windwos XP Service pack 1a
Zone Alarm 2003 pro

to do(WITH NO INTERNET CONNECTION):
1. Install Windwos XP,
2. after first boot, reboot and install sp1a
3. reboot again
4. install autopatcher XP with november updates
5. reboot
6. Install NAV 2004
7. reboot
8. Install Zone Alarm 2003
9.reboot
10. UR SET UP


notes: I recomend you be very careful with what you install

Dump the prefetch folder

Run bootvis

Clean out the MRU entries in the registry (use jv16)

Done.

If worse comes to worse, reformat your disk, then immediately create a backup image of it. It'll ease your pain for future reinstallations.
