DAEMON Tools is a virtual cd/dvd-rom emulator. It is able to emulate nearly all known copy protections on the market today.

Changelog for version 3.43:
* Added ability to change driver filenames (prevents future blacklists)
* Added blindwrite 5 image plugin (bw5mount)
* Fixed some crash problems in 9x with 3rd party drivers like nerocd95.vxd
* Improved setup
* Many blacklists fixed
* Fixed some bugs

Cool. Thanks for the info. weaponx.

Also, that driver name customization should help combat BS like this.

WARNING: This new version may break your computer!!!

Here are the nitty gritty details to date ...

Before I left this afternoon, I applied this latest release (attempting to "upgrade on-the-fly" from v3.41) and rebooted my computer at the request of the setup. Windows XP came up, but then I get two severe error reports to send to MS. I rebooted one more time in case that was a fluke, and I started getting errors about an invalid BOOT.INI so it was defaulting to C:\WINDOWS. It continued loading but would blue screen mid way each and every time!

Well I broke out my XP CD and brought up the recovery console. First I did a BOOTCFG /list, but the damn thing came up empty. For safety sake, I did a FIXBOOT. I then did a FIXMBR, but for some reason it warned of non-standard of or damaged boot sector and warned of potential data loss if it fixed it, so I let that be. BOOTCFG still came up empty though, so I did a /scan followed by a /rebuild and a /list to confirm the results.

I started Windows again. No BOOT.INI problems, but still the BSOD, so I went back and choose last known configuration. This time it came up fine and I noticed that Daemon's virtual device was disabled.

I'm gonna keep playing with things here to see what else I can find out and if I can make this new v3.43, but I suspect I may end up just going back to the previous v3.41. I wanted to share my experiences though before someone else encountered the same grief.

UPDATE: Daemon Tools v3.43 + Easy CD Creator v5 --> BSOD!!!

Okay, okay, so I've now spent some more time with this problem (e.g. uninstalling the old version before reinstalling the new version, etc.) and have come to the following conclusion--v3.43 is incompatible with my current PC configuration. Specifically, it's incompatible with the old Easy CD Creator v5.x that I'm using (**ignores comments from peanut gallery**).

The reason that I've come to this conclusion is due to the following entry from the Daemon Tools' readme:

QUOTE
System crashes and/or blue screen of death on some systems having (or had) Adaptec (Roxio) Easy CD Creator installed. Older versions of this burning program are known to cause lots of trouble in combination with other burning soft or DAEMON Tools. Therefore, we DO NOT RECOMMEND installing DAEMON Tools on a PC with Easy CD Creator installed! In order to completely remove Easy CD Creator, download and install 'Feurio' (www.feurio.com). This application runs a system check after installation (also can be started manually by selecting 'Extras' -> 'System Check') pointing to all potential 'trouble-makers' on your system allowing to disable/remove them.

Both versions have such a warning, but I hadn't noticed it before since all previous releases had been used without incident. However, if I had written the install (which, as a matter of fact, I do as part of my job), then I would have added these checks to the setup routine instead of simply denoting this in the readme file. Especially since the symptoms are so severe!

Since I haven't nor do I plan on wasting my money upgrading to Easy CD & DVD Creator v6 though, I will continue to use v3.41 of Daemon Tools in the meantime.

online2long.gif This was a somewhat intriguing problem, and hopefully this information will proove useful to my fellow ieXers. Even though a lot of you use either Nero or Alcohol for your burning software. wink.gif
