@OutlandishTrendz: Oh, this is with the guest ID! I misunderstood you and thought you were getting that error when trying to log in to the MS Beta Place web site or access that enrolled beta program.
Yeah, that can certainly happen with a guest ID, so I'll remove it.
@shooter468: In that case, which guest ID were trying to use?

MMC 2.1
MMC 2.1 (shipping as a component in Windows Server R2 and Longhorn) continues to be the host for a variety of OS and 3rd party admin tools.
guest id : MMC21Guest
Thank you for your interest! MMC 2.1 (shipping as a component in Windows Server R2 and Longhorn) continues to be the host for a variety of OS and 3rd party admin tools.
Please take a moment to complete the nomination survey. Our goal is to form a well targeted group of External ISVs that collectively represent the diverse range of MMC snap-ins that exist today.
This beta program will consist of two phases:
The first phase will focus on compatibility testing of existing (1.2 and 2.0) snap-ins using MMC 2.1. This phase is very important because MMC 2.1 includes reliability updates that have the potential to break snap-ins which use the API in unsupported ways. Note that there are currently no known incompatibilities, but we would like to find out if there are any breaking scenarios earlier rather than later. If you do encounter any problems with your existing snap-in(s), we will work with you to determine if we can fix the break in MMC 2.1 or if you need to fix your snap-in.
The second phase will focus on the development of new snap-ins using the new managed code snap-in framework in MMC 2.1. A Tech Preview SDK is now available (December 2004).
Beta Information
The beta testing process is very important because it helps ensure that we release the best possible product.
Before you continue, it is important to understand that the beta release of any product will not display the stability of a shipped Microsoft product. You may encounter problems with MMC 2.1, which could possibly result in a loss or destruction of data. This release is not appropriate for production use, and we suggest that you back up your existing data before you install and run this software.
MMC 2.1 Q&A
Q: What are the goals of MMC 2.1?
Reduce cost of snap-in development
Managed code framework
Inherit directly from snap-in classes
v2.0 interfaces abstracted by MMC
2 hrs vs. 2 weeks
Hosted WinForm views
Consolidated menu management
Increased reliability
Heap isolation
Standard ETW tracing
AppDomain snap-in isolation (Managed)
Asynchronous activation and processing (Managed)
Enhance user experience
Simplified console customization
Improved discoverability
Non-blocking UI
Richer snap-in views (WinForm)
Champion consistency in management tools
Menu consistency
UI Design Guidelines
Snap-in Architectural Patterns
Design Templates
Programming Guidelines
Detailed Samples
Best Practices
Q: Will MMC have a Web UI?
A: We will have a native only UI as the majority of customers prefer a native UI to a Web UI for security, performance and usability reasons.
Q: What version of the .NET Framework will be required?
A: .NET Framework 2.0 code named Whidbey.
Q: When will it ship?
A: When Windows Server 2003 R2 ships.

Hey guys,
Im a newbie at this sort of thing as Ive only ever installed Longhorn sucessfully once. Ive just recived my first email from Microsoft Beta telling me Ive sucessfully got in for The Longhorn Command Shell program. Can someone tell me exactly what this is? Is it a version of Longhorn atall?
Thanks for your help
I know I am a total n00b at this stuff but I WILL learn!
kingkong316
May 2 2005, 19:20
No it is not a version of longhorn. It is just the command shell that will be included in longhorn. So you now have a very small part of longhorn.

Thanks, can anyone tell me what the command shell does? And what I will be testing with it?
Quactaur
May 2 2005, 20:19
Its essentially "ms dos" for longhorn. It uses a different route to perform commands, and is sort of the bottom ladder in longhorn beta testing.
If you can find something wrong with it (and at this stage, with such a basic program, there probably won't be) you will be looked on with more favour for future betas.

well we will see
personally, i dont doubt the info. 1) the beta1 documentation is already in 5048, 2) the keynote vids show them being fairly close to beta1, 3) it makes sense for MS to distribute Beta1 at PDC05 to anyone who comes; beta testers should get it before the others

What exactly is Small Business Software? Did I miss a description somewhere?
Graphing calculator isnt anything special
now MS Student, thats another story.
I wish i hadnt quit that beta

May 15 2005, 06:39
yeah, i tried for that one too, but got there about a month too late. oh well, there'll be other betas.
Taco Bell
May 15 2005, 06:59
@Heart_Attack: I believe that it's basically a collection of software that's targeted at small business and licensed/priced accordingly.
I know it includes MS Office Small Business Accounting and Business Contact Manager for MS Office Outlook. It seems it may also include a full copy of MS Office Professional. Not sure exactly what else though.
For more information about it though, try these previous postings:
@hAsin: Sometimes a small beta is a nice change of pace though. Besides, successful testers of it will a receive a final, full packaged product of Microsoft Student 2006 anyway.
who gets student 2006?
student testers only?
or both student and graphing calculator testers?
im out of student now
Taco Bell
May 15 2005, 08:24
@hAsin: Well successful testers of BOTH programs (e.g. Student 2006 Beta and Student Graphing Calculator 2006 Beta) will get a full copy of Student 2006. Also, to further clarify things, Microsoft is considering "successful testers" those who submit one or more valid bugs by the end of the respective betas.
However, the "small beta" that I was specifically referring to was the Student Graphic Calculator as that's the one I'm enrolled in. Especially since you said it was nothing special and I'll be getting a copy of the "big beta" anyway.
damn
its near impossible to find a bug in Graphing Calculator

no student 06 for me
i'll have to "buy" it when it releases
Taco Bell
May 15 2005, 09:40
@hAsin: Yeah, it is hard man.
I pounded on beta 1 and submitted four bugs for it. I tried a couple things in beta 2, but didn't find any bugs. I threw on beta 3 the other day and found a bug that MS will "consider for a future enhancement". Need to spend some more time on this new build, but it's definitely getting even harder with each new cut of the beta.

I got in a bug or two for the Graphing calculator beta. I love those new skins. I wonder if we will be able to make our own, ala Winamp.

Taco Bell, are you sure? I think if you're successful in both of those testings, you'll actually get the full product of BOTH. I'm sure they'll ship Graphing Caluculator on it's own; if they don't, that's a big loss for them.

They won't be shipping Graphing Calculator on it's own, I read it somewhere on BetaPlace.
Yeah I do agree that this beta program (graph calc) is hard to find bugs on, but I found quite a few

Also I believe that if you are enrolled in both Student 2k6 beta and Graph Calc, and you meet the requirements in the sweepstake rules, you will get 2 copies of Student 2006.

Microsoft releases Debug Diagnostics 1.0 - Release Candidate 1
Microsoft is working diligently on a new tool designed to make the life easier for IIS administrators and developers who are tasked with solving complex problems such as crashes, hangs, or memory leaks. The tool, called Debug Diagnostics 1.0, is the next generation debugging utility that extends on the functionality of previous tools such as IIS Debug Toolkit 1.1, Debug Matrix, and IIS State. This tool will be the only fully supported tool for debugging applications that run on IIS upon release and is supported on the IIS 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 platforms.
To join the beta and provide invaluable feedback to the designers,
please do the following -
