Basically Microfucks says that Im over my activation limit and is refusing to reactivate my Microfucks Reader which for the next 6 months will render any and all eBooks that I own completely and utterly useless.

Why in the hell do they care how many times I reinstall XP?

This is the first time I have reformatted my laptop in almost 6 months and Ive already used up my quota for 6 months and I use this machine (desktop not my laptop) here as a testbed occasionally to see if a network card has gone bad or something. However WPA never bitches about the desktop needing to be activated so why in the hell would Reader?

A single hardware change is enough to require reactivation!

The Hard Drive Volume Serial ID changing can change the installation code!

Who in the fuck did they hire to think this shit up?

Oh well make WPA easy to deal with but Reader will be a bitch?

Oh yeah and you cant get 24hour tech support from MS to get it fixed since they are only open till 9fucking PM on the west coast.

Oh yeah that was almost 4 hours ago.

Im sending this laptop back into gateway tomorrow and all I wanted to do was read for a bit while my fiance used the desktop to write her paper thats due tomorrow.

But I guess thats too much to ask from fucking MS.

Guess what? If they dont fix this shit immediately I will charge them for every novel that I have purchased and can no longer ready thanks to their shitty Activation that redoes it on a single hardware change.

How many copies of Microsoft Reader can I activate?
You are entitled to activate Microsoft Reader on up to eight different devices using the same Microsoft Passport account. However, certain actions such as reformatting your hard drive and resetting a Pocket PC require you to reactivate your device, which will count against this initial quota. You can activate more copies of Microsoft Reader if you use a different Passport. However, if you purchase an eBook title on a device where you activated Microsoft Reader with your first Passport, you won't be able to read that title on a device where Microsoft Reader was activated using your second Passport, and so on.

Well that does not sound like to much fun, eight Activations is quite a bit for 6 months. Did you use that amout of Activations, I'm sure that if you explain to MS the whole situation, they are usually pretty good at resolving these types of issues.

Hope everything works out for you. smile.gif

why don't you find a slipstreamed copy of xp then you can format as many times as you want. then you don't have to worry about the registration. if you cannot find a copy on the internet, search iex for the instruction on how to slipstream

Well, that would be a waste considering he one of the many who wrote it for us in 2001.

Besides a plain jane slipstreamed XP will do nothing in this matter. Some of us like to do things the legal way. I own 3 official XP's given to me by MS. And it was a hoot just to format and reinstall it as many times I could on day 1 just to see what MS would do, and it was nice to vent over the phone with people that still worked for my old employer.

jes I did help right that lil slipstream guide didnt I? lol

I forgot all about that

But to the previous guy my complaint isnt about XP

Its about Microsoft Reader 2

Its a program used to read eBooks.

For my laptop activation for XP isnt a problem since Gateway uses an unlimited activation key (I only know this because I called them, and no it wont work on other machines so dont ask for it)

However MS Reader likes to be reactivated every bloody time you reformat your drive since your HDs Volume Serial ID changes.

Which means it doesnt even really check your HD to see if its a diff one.

It just checks the serial.

This really sucks for me. See Ive only activated Reader on this laptop a max of 3 times in 6 months and that is the absolute max.

On my desktop its the same. I havent even used it after this last format as I have a tendency to not read books on my desktop much.

Just when Im laying down, or on a trip, or at someones house, etc.

So I should have 2 activations left for this thing which would be just fine

One activation for now and one activation for later.

But now because of some things today I wont be able to send off my laptop for about a week now sad.gif

So I want to be able to activate it so I can read some of my books.

However since I do have a few books that dont require activation I can read something.

I still want to be able to read the books I bought though sad.gif

still no love from MS on this one.

I just fired off an email stating that I will not be seeking official representation regarding the fact that they have basically screwed up since I have not used up my activation quota and are now failing to respond in a timely manner.

Maybe this will rile someone up

Especially considering the fact that on their webpage they specifically state that activations on a device that has already been activated before do not count towards the quota.

Funny considering that I only use 3 PCs total and only 2 of them have reader installed at max.
