I have used Mcafee, norton...both not that good.
I was thinking of getting AVG, any thoughts on it or others.
Chris
Norton is the best, they get the fixes and cures for viruses before anyone else, also there software is small and doesnt take up much resources (im using corporate edition)
ReLapse
Actualy the majority of all large anti-virus software companies pool their virus information.
Thus there is a good preventitive measure no matter what program you use.

Norton and Ncafee arent that good. I wanted opinions on other software.
ReLapse
I hate norton so much that i have 2004 here and its up for grabs if anyone wants it.

Mcafee all the way, Ive been using it for quite awhile and its never gave me no problems,

Now Norton I have the legit 2004 copy and I installed that and it just started giving me a whole bunch of problems, it took alot of resources, it took a long while to come up and I was dissapointed in how it performed,

If I recommended something, it would be Mcafee, If you wish not to pay for something then AVG will do the job! smile.gif

I'm using SAV corporate which uses much less resources than NAV. Here's a test of many but a little dated.

A current pass/fail tests of AV's - http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/tests.xml?200402
Prelapsarian
http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communities/a...rus/index.shtml

Certification stuff and standard testing can be found there. Unfortunately, I think all the AV vendors make sure that they pass the test. NOD is the AV with the longest running 100% success rate...

AVG/Grisoft: No options in the free version, not that this is a bad thing for 99% of the users out there.

Norton/Symantec: I'm not a big fan of any Norton products anymore. The Corporate edition does use less resources, but who here actually bought Corporate licenses?

McAffee: Bleah. Used to be good once upon a time, not sure anymore as I haven't installed one of their versions since v4 or something like that. I'm not sure if they still do, but they even went so far as to put pop-up ads on their web site.

Kaspersky: Commonly referred to as the best AV out there. I don'thave any experience with it though.

Trend: We have the corporate edition (OfficeScan) at work and I don't like it at all.

If you've noticed AV vendors are incorporating more and more into their AV products. Pop-up blockers, ad stoppers, secure deletion, firewalls, etc. I'm not a fan of that either.

I used to use InoculateIT, and I thought it was great. It was configurable, small footprint, only an AV, and did a good job.

Edit:
http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communities/a..._certprod.shtml

Cleaning is a lot different than detecting at times. From that list you can see it's a much smaller group of AV products that clean properly...

Panda: I like Panda Titanium, even had a quite tray icon. But it had problems with networks and large compressed files. Platinum has a built-in firewall last I checked.

Surely SAVCE is quite good thing, but not in all. Tell me please, how good it works with Outlook Express scanning? It does nothing! Wright?
Because of this SAV is NOT recomended to common users... Lets stop on NAV and AVP...
aquaboy
I have tried them all...norton, mcafee and Kaspersky la la lahhhhh... the best i have found so far is AVG.. even though the demo version works, that is easily overcome if you are a hunter.

As far as i am concerned, AVG is fast, light on resources and always being kept up to date. try it

I was using SAV Corp, but since I tore down my AD Domain I've been using some free stuff from my ISP.

On one system I'm using a Computer Associates eTrust Security Suite, Firewall is based on Zone Alarm and AV is Based on McAfee AV.

On my other 2 systems I have the McAfee Security Center that has the AV, Firewall, Privacy Service, and SpmKiller. I like how it tightly integrates with Outlook 2003.

Both suites are provided by my ISP for free.

As you can see, everyone has their favorites.

The best thing one can do is check the links prelap posted to see the ones that have a cert for cleaning and such. Then go to the web sites for them and download and try the trial versions. Find one that you like, and see how it taxes your system, see how well it operates, then choose.
::daedelus::
I use Trend Micro Internet Security because it's provided free of charge by my work.

NOD32 trial seems to make my Windows 2003 Server test system freeze. That's not cool. Not sure what it's doing, and this is without actively using the system...
ReLapse
I went with AVG after trialing some of the others mentioned here.

AVG just rocks....nuff said, bought it btw.
ooeeaa
Norton is crap, it slows down your computer terribly. The same for Mcaffee, it is crap. Forget all of them and use AVG. Even if you don't want to buy it, the free version has all of the options you need. It is reliable and it doesn't slow your computer down.

i'd say norton internet security, even tho i'm have big troubles with the firewall in it, it wont let me acess any web browsers anymore, but other internet based apps works!

I've tried a lot of AV's. My current thought about AV's & other programs lately has been to use as much freeware as possible vs. payware/trialware/cr*ckware. So now I'm using Avast! home as resident & BitDefender free as non-resident. Very impressed by both. But if monies no object (including kickasss top of line hardware) I gotta go with KAV pro. tongue.gif
[Voodoo]
the only thing I don't like about norton is the activation sad.gif

I bought the product, reinstalled windows a few times and reinstalled norton a few times. Bang. No more activations available sad.gif

How's that?

I mean, etrust has it's own Anti-virus software (inoculate it), why would they use Macafee?

I ask this because at work we use Computer Associates eTrust InoculateIT 6.0, the GUI looks less fancy then the common used scanners, but I must admit it does the job perfectly.

I received an evaluation copy of etrust from Computer Associates when I was at the Win Server 2003 product launch, and yes you can select which scan engine you wish to use. There are 3 different scan engines to choose from going by memory, 1 is inoculate, 1 is mcafee, and the other one I can't remember, but if you are really interested to know when i'm at work tomorrow I could pull out that CD and install it and check for you smile.gif

EDIT: I thought there were 3 engines but I must be wrong, I just checked their site and it says only 2 different scan engines.

eTrust Antivirus Key Product Features/Benefits:

Dual Scanning Engines for Double the Protection. eTrust Antivirus has two high performance scanning engines, both of which are certified by ICSA Labs to detect 100% of "in-the-wild" viruses.

oh well if I can find the CD tomorrow at work i'll install it and check
K2
The scan engines referred to are : inoculateIT and VET. (and yes, you can make a choice whenever you scan)

VET really isn't any good, inoculateIT is ok. But both are property of CA, so I would think it's strange if they would include someone elses scan engine in their own products.

But hey, in the IT sector you can expect anything.
