<img style="float: right" src="http://www.iexbeta.com/images/news/logos/iexMicrosoft.png">A teenage computer whizz from Aberdeen has averted a potential crisis at software giant Microsoft.

IT specialist Matt Thompson was barely out of college when he discovered a security glitch in Microsoft's Windows operating system.

The 19-year-old informed the company and worked with them for six months to solve the problem.

But all he received for helping protect Microsoft from hackers was a mention on its website.

Mr Thompson discovered a flaw in the company's Jet Database Engine while carrying out work for a client at the firm where he works, Aberdeen IT.

The bug allowed an attacker to take complete control of an affected system, install programs, and view, change, or delete data.

Poor kid, MS should at least give him some kind of sponsorship or provide training to further his skills in MS software.

eh.... they should offer rewards for people who find flaws in the system. I personally think this is BS. He could have told the hacker community instead of telling MS. Then MS would probably have another MyDoom or MSBlast on their hands. If they offer $150,000 (?) for information leading to the capture of hackers, why don't they give a reward for information to seal a hold that hackers could use to exploit?

that's bullshit he deserves something from them ... cheap ass bastards.

Yeah I definately agree on he should get something, at least be paid what the MS employee's were paid over the course of the 6 months. This is BS. Or give him free training and some software.

Well, they've blown it for future help from others then.

Sell it to the highest bidder anyone?
trev
That teen should work for Microsoft in the future! He's better than the people working at Microsoft.

Damn! Mike Rowe got more for owning www.mikerowesoft.com than this kid gets for finding a fairly important security flaw!?!?

Bad move msoft, that's a bad reputation for help given from the community!
