Thought i'd add a list of current programs i use, incase anyone is looking for soloutions to certain tasks:
Web browsing : Firefox (in the form of deerpark alpha)
Documenting : Office 2003 (does presentations, great ocr, voice & handwriting recognition, the works)
Theming: Windowblinds (get a light theme, use it, and turn off the windows theme service and it actually uses up less ram than xp's standard themes!)
Chat : MSN messenger v7 and skype
Music playback : Winamp (untill Itunes or WMP supports ogg properly)
Music Management : Mediamonkey (great tagging program, syncs to most audio devices flawlesly too. A bit too bloated for music playback though)
Antivirus : AVG free edition (turn off autoprotect, update and run regularly and you've just given your system a *huge* boost)
Firewall : Sygate Personal Firewall
Bit-torrent : Azureus (java-bloated, but best features for a torrent client)
IRC : Mirc with the nonamescript installed
P2P : Emule (if there's something that's not on torrent, it *will* be on Emule)
Archiving : WinRAR (7zip is a great alternative, but the integration and file-support leaves a little to be desired, for now)
CD Burning : Nero 6
CD Emulation : Daemon-Tools (Fast, light and very capable)
Image viewing : Picasa (the built-in XP picture viewer is great, but Picasa is a little bit more easier to use)
Image editing : Photoshop CS2
Video Editing : Pinnacle Studio 9 for the quick jobs, Adobe Premier Pro for the hard stuff.
Graphics : Lightwave (not as featured as Maya, but good enough for me)
Web-design : Dreamweaver (*sucks* at table-management, but with css, which it kicks ass with, who cares?)
Utilities : FreeRAMxp Pro (double click and it cleans up your RAM)
Video-Playback: Media Player classic with all the addons (watch quicktime and real without the bloated programs)
Podcasting : Doppler Radio (the UI is a bit quirky, but its the easiest to use (Itunes could be better if it had more library support) and most streamlined Podcast manager i have used)
Eyecandy : Object Dock and a great program called HSI which lets you set boundaries anywhere on the screen (so when you maximise a window, it doesnt overlap the dock, or vice-versa)
Audio Ripping/Conversion : DbPoweramp (it's commercialized a little lately, but with directshow support, and one of the fastest rip times for cds, plus explorer tag-edit integration, it gets my vote over any alternative)
Fun : Numerous games (CSS, BF2, KOTOR, JK3:JA, GTA:SA and R:TW are worthy of mention. Also, google earth and worldwind are great toys to mess about with.
I hope that's shown members and guests a good list of programs to use, or a list of amateur-ish programs that absolutely suck (if you think so, PM me, or post here and reccomend an alternative)

Aston2! - it's a shell replacement for any Windows system starting with XP – you can use it as a whole or change your desktop by piecemeal.
I think the standard Windows desktop is too rigid and inflexible. In contrary, every element of Aston2 theme: menu, desktop, panels - can be tweaked and customized. Widgets help to know the weather forecast, system resources, make quick notes. Animation can be used for almost every element and every widget – 3D themes are adorable. I have the choice and full control of what and how it will be displayed.
Switching to Aston2 was easy because it incorporates all the things that I was already familiar with. Aston2 makes them much more efficient I’d say. Give it a try!
