I'm not experienced with such programs, but you can also disable images in IE via Tools | Options, Advanced tab, Multimedia section, "Show Pictures" check box.

hmm for browsing i dont realy know yet for downloading i suggent getting a download manager like DAP -->7 streams at ones for max usage of your connection
(on broadband, 5 on dial up for reliability issues)
and this one really work, normally i "only" get 400KBytes/sec with my cable connection yet wenn downloading with DAP i can reach speed up to 800kbytes/1Mbytes a second
so yeah thats quite impressive -->
http://www.speedbit.com for that program

sometimes you can find small little tweaks, but nothing significantly increases speed, download managers on the other hand can get significantly better speeds at times.

If IE gives you a crappy download spead, use your download manager. That's my rule

What kind of connection do you have? If you're trying to speed up a 56k, then forget it. It can't be done.
If you're trying to speed up a high speed connection, then the best way is to use a download manager that can have more than one connection at once. I don't like download managers though. To me they're not worth the trouble.

If you are in domain, you can use isa server in arry mode it can make connection faster by cahcing the sites, it have some smart ways for caching like active caching and it can be adjusted to do it in non work hours, anyway in general you can make connection faster by , disbale unwanted protocols or using any cahcing methods or get a higher connection.

Forget software. Get cablenut and tweak your settings manually to get the best results.
