Hi!

Can someone tell me if something like this is possible with an Exchange 2003 Server?:

1.
Let say an Exchange 2003 Server is in a big company (e.g. company.com wink.gif ).
All employees have a mailbox on this exchange 2003 Server.
All the employees has also a mailbox on a POP3/SMTP server pop3.company.com / smtp.company.com .

Can be an Exchange Server 2003 setup so that he automatically collects the mails from an employee pop3 account and put it automatically in his Exchange 2003 Server account???

So that the employee can only use the exchange account to collect all their mails and not from two accounts.

2.

What about Exchange 2003 Server and Spam protection in a company. Can someone provide me some information to this issue?

Kind regards,

gicio

1. I've not a clue.

2. Exchange has some basic black list/white list functionality built into it, but by itself is not really "impressive". Our Office has been using GFi's Mail Essentials with Exchange 2003 and it's worked out quite well. I had to fight tooth & nail with "the boss" who wanted to just let Outlook handle it...

Hi,

While not dealing specifically with spam, there is a recent white paper from Microsoft about how to setup exchange 2003 to detect and eliminate viri from email attachments. Look for the following file on Microsoft's site:

EX2K3_STOPVIRUSES.EXE

It may give you a lot of configuration information that can be directly applied to spam.

1. Yes it can be done. Add a folder called something I'll call it "Remote Pop3". Add the remote account to the email lists and configure outlook to download all messages to that folder.

This should do what you need.

2. I have to agree with PM. Mail Essentials works quite well...I recommend this. However I at work don't use outlook or exchange. We are a Netware/Groupwise house (for now) and I let my firewall filter spam and attachments and the like.

I'd heard that Exchange didn't "play well" with POP acounts, the last time I tried it I ended up getting errors trying to send mail to the pop server from outlook. Granted the two shouldn't have had anything to do with each other, but the tests failed consistantly.

The POP server was/is mine so I knew/know it was online at the time. Here is what happened; (all done on same outlook client/same email)

If I sent from the POP server to Exchange (it worked)
Reply to Email from exchange to POP (it worked)
Reply again From POP to Exchange (it fails)

Any third generation sends fail (damn strange i thought).

That is strange very strange. Are the headers on the mail correct or did they somehow get malformed? Thats all I can think of for now.....

1. Why not just set up forwarders on the POP3 server to send all mail to the appropriate account on the Exchange box? This is a very common thing to do, generally referred to as "mail gateway" that keeps your Exchange box from being directly exposed. MS even recommends it.

2. Mail Essentials is indeed the thing to have. And it's CHEAP, all things considered.

Um... in my case, the POP server is mine & the Exchange server belongs to/is at the company I work for. So...I really don't want my site mail going through the company's server, but I like to check it from/at the office.

I'm guessing gicio's issue involves an ISP's POP server, and isn't likely to get forwarded.

(ok I'm blindly hoping we have the same issue so i don't look like a complete asshole for hijacking the poor guy's thread... smile.gif )

@Jay The malformed header thing rings a bell...Feel free to elaborate while I'm digging.

...UpDate...Found these two MSKB articles, which I believe describe exactly what symptoms I'm getting. I'll verify it (the fix) tomorrow if I get time.
