Is it confirmed that all 640-000500 to 640-000600 works because I checked a PID from a company here in sweden and it wasn't like that!
if they arent using a 64x based PID and really narrowed down to the PID range you listed chances are they arent using Volume License editions of XP then.

I have installed SP2 and successfully got Windows Update v5 to work. Took a little while to do research on what key work, but I got it. Before that Windows Update used to say "Invalid Key".

I've tried using a 640-566993x and a 640-000576x VLK key with my SP1 Corporate Edition and I get this when I goto Windows Update V5 :-/....
[Error number: 0x80244028]
Cannot validate the product key
The product key used to install Microsoft Windows may not be valid. For more information about why you have received this error message, and steps you can take to resolve this issue, please visit How to Tell.
What am I doing wrong? Are there any registry changes I can make to go back to V4 of WindowsUpdate?
@ winxpuser23
You need to reboot after changing PID.

Doh! :-)... thank you... I rebooted and I got on (w the 640-000576x key, didn't reboot with -566993x)..
However, the only available update fails to download, but whatever.. it's the BITS and WinHTTP 5 thing... wonder if I need SP2 to use it...
hi
i want to thank you all this topic help me. it has all what people need in one.
now is my PID xxxxx-640-00056xx-xxxxx and i can go to WU v.5
...my only concern is once the final release SP2 comes out, as taco eludes to, there will be other tricks up Microsoft's many sleeves to use with WU v5...
...is it safe to say, that even though a key/PID may work today (with SP2) , it could go awry later on if Microsoft so wishes to blacklist the said key/PID?....some clarification on this would be wonderful!
...many thanks to the hard work of some here...very awesone work/research....

^^What?^^
Since i was here an long time ago, i am not here to rant or anything. I am just here to give you an little info.
Today the Bluelist keygen is
useless.
A: It makes an random keys from 640 to 650, anything other then 640 does not work whit winxp sp2
B: Find an keygen called MSKey4in1 it makes new S* in 1sec and does not use the brute force way as the bluelist keygen.

yo jonfr!
Bluelist is still good, people will just have to test there keys to make sure they find a working 640 PID. No big deal though, more options that are out there the better.

It's an waste of good cpu time (bluelist keygen). The keygen i have now makes new keys in seconds and every single one of them in the 640 line.

You're quite welcome sir, I was pretty sure that I wasn't the only one that ran across the only site that will allow you to download and use all the tool necessary to access the WU site...

@ AYHJA: I still don't understand what you mean! I had a hard time finding it too but that was when it was just a few days old. What tools are you talking about?
The only spot that I could find that had the download, was some free software site...It had the whole kit and kaboodle, everything you need to do what this topic suggests...But, when you download the file, which was about 1MB, the contents were password protected...
To get the password, you had to fill in those blanks, and that was what my post was about...

Yes, and anything other then *-640-* will not work.
just changed the PID and its ok now. according to a dutch neowin user, he saw windows sp2 ver. 5.4.3790.2181 built by: srv03_rtm(nsoy) in the windows update.

Yes, but he's Dutch.
So you have to take what he says with a grain of salt, as cannabis is still legal there.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change a Corporate Edition of WinXP to an OEM edition? My PC came with Windows XP Pro installed, but it came with all the other junk and no Windows recovery CD. So, I used one of the other copies of WinXP I have and used a Corporate Product key. Now, I want to change it back to the key that came with my PC, but it keeps telling me that its invalid. How can I fix this?
Theres no easy way of converting it. If you could obtain the correct OEM media for the key you have, you could try an in place upgrade (the third type of repair.....) but it sounds like you don`t have the cd. Really you should either get the correct CD from the manufacturer and use your OEM key, or use a non blacklisted volume license product key with your current install.

I have a Q:
Is it possible to slipstream a SP2 Build 2162 to a WinXP SP1 and use a key
from the keygen (PID 640 ofcourse) ?
Taco Bell
Aug 4 2004, 15:26
@Tarkules: Yes, and as a matter of fact, that's covered over
here. However, at this point, you might as well wait for the RTM build of SP2.

When does Windows Update 5 reject you if you have a bad key?
Taco Bell
Aug 6 2004, 01:36
@blunden: Probably when you hit the Install buttons, but I don't have first hand experience with being rejected.
P.S. Running 2162 and I see MS has now put out a new version of WU5.

isnt this topic pretty useless now that its been proven that SP2 will install on even an illegal copy of XP.
ive also heard windows update will not check for a legit key either now.

Aug 7 2004, 20:29
@Something Corporate: Yes, it seems that Microsoft quietly reversed its position on the whole key issue.
Oh well, this topic will remain for informational purposes as this whole forum will soon become an archive anyway.
This thread is a goldmine, given you actual read what's posted. Awesome work from you guys. Not that any of you care what I say, but still...
hi there,
i'm currently on a 'bad' version of xp pro corp with sp1. i'm going to wait for the full release of sp2. and win update v5 is working fine for me at the moment.
so here's the thing, i actually have a legit version of xp pro corp with a proper cd key but i'm not using it at the moment, i would definitely prefer to use it but won't bother changing if sp2 etc. will be ok on what i'm running now.
so is win update v5 working now a sufficient test that i'll be able to install sp2 and continue using win update without any problems?
thanks in advance for your help, colm.

Taco Bell
Aug 12 2004, 17:56
@busman401: What I mean by that is, in time, this forum will be closed and will become a read-only archive now that SP2's been released.
At that point, everyone will be forced to use the "Windows Family" forum like they do now regarding SP1.

When you used the word "forum" instead of "topic" I feared the worst.
Taco Bell
Aug 13 2004, 14:30
@busman: I did mean to use the word "forum", but you misinterpreted that as being all of the forums or the "board" (i.e. the whole site). No worries there though as I do just mean the "Windows XP SP2" forum.

I am using a corp cd and my pid is in the 648-63888xx range will it be ok?
I really dont want to go through the key hell AGAIN

and I have an old keygen for sp1 .... will that generate a useable key for sp2?
Taco Bell
Aug 13 2004, 17:40
@Flammenfaust: Evidently all this additional checking was quietly removed from the release, so you should be okay as is.
The new rule of thumb is that if it worked in SP1, then it will continue to work in SP2.
