So is there any way of generating keys that pass the Windows Update/WGA check?
I'm asking because I'm reinstalling some systems..
I can't make out if you guys are constantly referring to changing the key and it not working, or doing a fresh install and the keys not working..
I'm trying to generate keys which work for both the initial install and to pass WGA checks. The 640 range keys work for the install and SP2, but fail WGA. If you change the key from 640 to 700 after install, it passes WGA. The 700 key will revert to the 640 key after a reboot. Thing is, I can't find a way to use a 700 range key for the install. It forces me in to activation on the first boot.
Make sense ?
Could a bunch of us generate in different PID ranges and share our results ?
I'd be willing to give it a go.

WGA Bypass:
Generate a key from 640-500000 to 640-600000. Any one will do. Install Windows XP. Install SP2. Reboot. Do *not* attempt any additional updates or WGA downloads.
Generate a second key from 700-0 to 700-10000. Change the key. Reboot. View the key. It should be the same. Now try Windows Update and passing WGA.
Note:this only works for the VLK aka Corp version of Windows XP Pro. For OEM, Retail, Academic, and MSDN versions I have no media, so no workarounds, yet.

I've been lurking and learning for the better part of today. My particular VLK install of XP SP2 (slipstreamed) was done using an older keygen that always worked (until WGA, of course), and my PID is a 645.
If I generate a key in the 700 range, it behaves a bit differently than you describe. For me, it doesn't stick on reboot, and it doesn't *pass* WGA...it seems to simply bypass it. I'm making sure to delete the WGA folder under All Users/Application Data before trying Windows Update.
Can you clarify why it's important to *install* with a 640 VLK before trying switching to a 700 key? Obviously the 700 key isn't working the same for me as it does for you guys, and I'm assuming that's because I installed with a 645 PID...but why does it matter?
Also, the specific issue I'm trying to resolve is with Media Player. Using the "check for player updates" option on the help menu says I'm current and no updates are available. Running Windows Update (and bypassing -- not passing-- WGA) also shows no updates for Media Player. But when I try to open specific content, it says I need certain security updates, which I'm unable to obtain. I've just been assuming it's because of WGA. Does that sound right, or could it be DRM that's causing me this particular headache? I DO have legit rights to the content: it's not copied, pirated, or hacked. I paid for it.
Heh, sorry, those were kinda separate-but-related issues.

It's a DRM problem. Try this link (

well .. I had spoke too soon in my last post .. since the key changed back to the original on a reboot .. I usually leave my computer on for days at a time and didn't notice it until today.
I guess I'll stick with trixie and the script until a permanent solution is found.

I hit paydirt.
Using the MS 4 in 1 keygen, select Win XP Pro VLK. From 640-6463xx to 640-6463xx, where 6463xx is the six digits of a /legit/ MS VLK. Change the key. Reboot. It *will* pass WGA.

That makes no sense. If I can get my hands on a legit VLK, why do I need a keygen?

What would happen if I installed it with a keygened key in the right PID-area? Is there any chance it would be accepted or are they checking the keys with a database?

Would be interestig to know but luckely just disabling the WGA-component in IE works fine and is actually faster as it doen't have to verify.

This seems really bizarre... I have 2 machines using the same VLK. One passes WGA the other doesn't... I don't really care about WGA etc. I'm just curious as to how this is possible....wtf??? If I try to reset the PID and use the VLK I don't get the same PID as on the working machine is that the way it is supposed to be?
Thanks!

Sure is. I wonder what part of the PID it checks. Every number in the PID is not depending on the key, is it? Will it check the key or the PID?

Hi guys, I too have a VLK, a 648 one. No activation needed at installation, but it don't pass the WGA test either. So I went to Microsoft site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;328874They are telling us to run the script ChangeVLKeySP1.vbs together with a key that will pass the WGA test at startup, and that means EVERY startup, as far as I can understand. I tried one in the 700 range and it passed.
Just run gpedit.msc, Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Script/Start and add the script. Then you're done! That's it!
