that doesnt answer my question :\ i have norton 2004 trial version installed that would pick up any viruses. im positive it isnt a virus causing this error
I'd suggest returning that package to the vendor for money back and then just buying the Norton Antivirus 2004 Standard edition at a brick & mortar store like Target, WalMart or BestBuy. Everyone I've ever seen with Norton SystemWorks installed ended up uninstalling it when they found out how much of their CPU cycles and memory the mostly redundant bloatware consumed- especially on any slower under 600mhz PC's with less than 256MB. Unless you like a bunch of bells and whistles and have no clue about ME or XP's "Restore" capabilities, I really didn't see any required functionality in SystemWorks that wasn't already available through some other method in Windows, especially XP. Maybe Norton's Internet Security is useful, but I was already using ZoneAlarm before they came out with that, so I never switched. (XP's built-in firewall only checks inbound traffic though that might be changing with SP2 - I don't know yet.)
Also, did you know their (Symantec's) latest software (at least my NAV 2004 Std) seems to register your IP address or something with a central server? If your friend already installed from these disks (at a different location) with that product key, you and anybody else will probably NOT be able to install them to your PC's- I think. I could be completely wrong about that.
For anyone already using SystemWorks who's happy with it, more power to ya, and I hope your happy computing continues. I may have simply run into a lot of unlucky people with very slow PC's. It's just my opinion that Norton Anti-virus is great, but the rest of their software is stuff I really don't need. That's all.

thanks for the advice, ive noticed it hogs so much processor power like. ill just try the standard edition see whether i can get that working.
I like Norton SystemWorks Pro 2004 , but lots of people have had problems. I am one of the lucky ones. OK boot up times are increased , but that's what you pay for having the security. It doesn't hog any resources, that's just a myth created by people who installed it badly, or if you are auto scanning loads of large compressed files while downloading dvdrs or dvd games as multi rar files , etc. That function has to be configured to exclude those files for auto checking or the function should be turned off , it wasn't really meant for those hoards of large files.
