<img style="float: right" src="http://www.iexbeta.com/images/news/logos/iexApple.gif">Fashion Firm Apple has released an update to its Mac OS X client software, dubbed "Panther" and patched a security hole in its graphics library. The OS X 10.3.5 improves the OS support for Bluetooth and broadband networking and updates graphics drivers.
It also improves compatibility with Apple and third-party applications and supports the import of MPEG-4 movie files from digital cameras by the Image Capture application. Apple said the update improves support for DHCP connections with Comcast cable modems and for printing to Bluetooth-capable printers by Hewlett-Packard.
It also fixes a long standing problem with the length of network home directory names on LDAP-based AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) servers. Now the "shorter name" will be limited to 24 characters, down from 39 characters, while the long name can still be up to 89 characters. Also released at the same time is Security Update 2004-08-09 which addresses a vulnerability in the PNG library, or libpng, a collection of graphics routines that manipulate PNG files.
The flaw was discovered last week. It enables a malicious PNG file to crash a program, and produce a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack. In other words nothing that a Windows bug can’t do.
