If you change your IP (as in spoof), your internet experience may suck. Packets sometimes need to go back to where they came from. So they would go back to your IP address. And if it's not the right one, then obviously they won't arrive.
Proxy servers are probably the easiest way to "hide" your IP address.
thanks for the info but what program would be the best to use?

Standard discalimer time: Due to the nature of TCP/IP, there is no guaranteed way to hide your identitiy on the Internet. You can use all the proxies you want, but a determined person can always track your activities back to you.
So, if you want to not get caught doing something, DON'T DO IT. Otherwise, you always take a risk.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled topic, already in progress.

That about sums it up.

Tell us your reason for wanting to change your IP, if it's to
surf pr0n sites anon, then Illrigger is correct, the only way is
to use an anon proxy ( even then you could still be traced ),
if it's to overcome some sort of IP ban, then there are other
ways round it.
What kind of internet connection do you have?
Well, I wanted to hide/change my IP becuase I just wanted my internet more secure. and Iam board
btw my internet connection is DSL extream, 3.0 MBPS

Using a proxy server for regular Internet surfing is a
BAD idea. Your browsing would be less secure than if you were using your normal static IP. The person running the proxy could monitor your surfing and get your browsing history, passwords, etc.
I play alot of multiplayer games, and some times I make people that own the server and see my IP kinda mad I guss you could say that, anyway, Iam kinda worried about them doing something bad, Iam not really on a router, and I have zonealarm but I here firewall programs dont do to much, my friend got into my computer easyly becuase we wanted to see how good a job zonealarm does, and it doesent do a good job, so do you guys have any ideas?

ZoneAlarm should do a great job. If you were using ZoneAlarm (and your friend didn't change and settings on it), I don't believe he really hacked in. If all your ports are closed, your computer won't receive incoming connections. It can make outgoing connections, so it's possible you're running a piece of software that's trying to connect to your friend's computer.
Call BellSouth and tell them to remove your static IP. I doubt they will if you have xtreme service, but let them know that not everyone wants a static IP. If the IP bothers you that bad, go back to their regular service.

For security: tell your parents to lay down the ~$60 for a decent internet router. Or build one yourself for free. If you're bored, then just build it and learn something new.
For hiding the IP address because you piss people off in games: learn to not piss people off. (i'm blunt.) If you need to change IP's then maybe you need to instead change the way you act? If they ban you because you're good, then find a new server, they are obviously pricks. If you piss them off because you're just an ass to them, then it serves ya right.
Ah hell, if push comes to shove you could call your ISP and request that they change your IP.

I just checked BellSouth, and they no longer require you to have a static IP with the xtreme package. Just call them and tell them to remove the static IP.
thanks for the info

I do have a router, but Iam wirelessly connected to it, I got a card in the back of my computer with a antena, but some reason my computer doesent seem to get the affects of the computer that is hardwired to the router, like if we open a port, it would be opened on the computer that is hardwired to the router but not on the computer that is wirelessly connected. I dunno whats the deal with that and it seems like the router company tech support are more dumb then me.

Yes because that computer is in the DMZ, look it up on

if you want to know what im talking about. If you need a port opening to YOUR wireless PC then you need to use port forwarding instead of just opening the port up to the DMZ IP
I don't think the router tech people are thick, your probably not able to let them know what your trying to do because you dont really know what your trying to do, you don't know what it entails with all this networking stuff.

Anonymous proxies tend to slow down your innernut experience, and like previously mentioned, the person running the proxy could log everything you do.
For your gaming, why not just be friends with the people who own the server instead of making them mad at you? Then you don't have to worry about getting booted or banned. Proxies won't help you get around this anyway.
Wireless is rather insecure itself. Even when set up correctly, someone can hack into your wireless network. Whatever you do, don't leave it insecure.
If you open a port on the router, it opens the port on the router. It does not open the port on your PC. If you have a firewall on your PC (for example), you would also need to open it there. Packets would also need to be FWDed from the router to your computer.

There are many free proxies out there that will keep an average Joe from detecting your IP. However it is correct that they will slow down your Internet connection immensely. Most I have tried make a 3mb connection feel like 56k. Just set up port forwarding on your router for gaming and try not to piss anyone off
DangerousDave86, I know what I want to do, and I know what DMZ mode is and I know about networking and routers, I never said I dident. you seemed to really go off topic when my whole post was for what proxy software to use, and now Iam done with this post.

WHAT THE FUCK?! You're the one that started talking about your router, I didn't go off topic anywhere.
If you open a port on your router, it goes to your hardwired computer. You said "I dunno whats the deal with that" so to me you obviously didn't know what the DMZ was. Now I just think your an ass.

@Gabe: I think you mentioned the router first, since you called up the techs and they were "dumb."
I stand by my original post: Call your ISP and request that they cycle your IP address, else live with the fact that you pissed someone off and move on to something else. And if you are bored and want to play with security, then build a router box from spare parts and learn a few new things at the same time.
