Does anyone know how-while not joined to the domain that I can send a mail through outlook-using my exchange server. We also have an OWA setup and I can't email to my OWA clients unless joined to the domain. Most of the time there is no reason not to join but in this case I need to not join. Also for an FYI while not joined to the domain I can use password authentication thru outlook to recieve mail from the exchange server. I am thinking there must be a setting or policy somewhere for this but I can't find.

I'm able to connect to the Exchange server from my House by VPNing into the Network through our Linux Firewall.
I've never had my home computer on the network other then that.

The steps required to properly authenticate/connect from non-domain Outlook client to a domain-based Exchange server can sometimes be a little tricky. However, that's the hard, so if you're able to receive mail, then you should certainly be able to send mail too.
Especially since Exchange doesn't know who's an OWA client and who's not until they actually go to connect, and even that can change from day to day, hour to hour.
Therefore, exactly what kind of behavior are you seeing because this seems very strange to me? Also, am I correct in inferring that you can e-mail non-OWA clients in this non-domain scenario?
By the way is Exchange 2000 or 2003 and which version of Outlook to boot?
