Ok I have this issue, After doing a automatic test on symantec website the site reported an issue with my system where one service that was supposed to start with windows was not starting this service is called "Security Gear" I checked on my system startup services and there was a Norton service there not running it was called Symantec Password Validation but it was set to manual and it was not started, I tried to start it and it would not start, I set it to automatic restarted Windows and still no luck

So I Uninstalled Norton System Works and made sure everything was removed, no traces of Norton, and guess what? that service was still there it was not removed with the removal of the program, Additionally another Norton service was still remnant one called "Network Provisioning Service" even with no Norton product installed and it was running.

So I disabled both services re-installed Norton System Works and those service are still there but they appear to be dead and not used by Norton still the Norton site now complaints about two services that are not started and need to be running.

I'm guessing that site just sees those two services on the system and it reports that they need to be started when they are really no longer needed by Norton.

I used to have Norton System Works 2004 before and perhaps those were services used by that version but that were never removed during the upgrade.

Can someone who has a perfect installation of 2005 check their system and see if:

"Symantec Password Validation"
"Network Provisioning Service"

are running on their system? I would really appreciate any help. Also if they are not needed can someone tell me a way to get rid of them from my system? I don't know how to remove start up services that are not needed or used anymore.

Thanks in advance.

***EDIT*** btw this is the URL of the site I use to do the system check:

1. Removing Symantec products usually never works.
2. It was probably a setting in the program itself as to why the service didn't start or was not being used.

Ok this is what you do, uninstall NIS (again) even though it will leave loads of stuff lying about. Then download this program : RnisUPG.exe.
Run that utility, and it should remove all traces of any version of NIS on your computer, including :

QUOTE
• Active Services/Processes
• Windows Installer Information (Including a shite load of registry keys)
• Liveupdate
• Livesubscribe
• Service Dependencies
• Services
• Registry Keys
• Com Servers And File Extensions
• Files And Directories

After running RnisUPG.exe reboot then reinstall NIS wink.gif

Edit* Oh fuck I've done it again, ignore what I've put above - I'm just having an off day *sighs* sad.gif. Sorry dude.

I got it fixed, Thanks, researching on the Symantec website I found another similar tool to the one you posted but to totally remove System Works 2005 and Norton AV, After removing from the ADD/REMOVE programs and then running that tool everything appears to be working fine.
Thanks for trying to help though.
