How does avg antivirus stack up to nortons? Is it ok? My dad and cousin use it and it seems to have more updates than nortons but does it detect ok?
Also, I noticed it puts there grisoft.com on the bottom of every out going email. Is there anyway to take that off?

umm which norton? the crappy end-user edition or the corporate or whatever it is called edition?
the one you get at the store is a resource hog.
ive run avg for a few years now. (I think years but might be only 2) Anyway I find it good. I back it up with Trends house call web site. I think I saw a review somewhere that said AVG was as good as Norton. Somethings Norton will miss AVG will pick up and vice versa.
As far as the outgoing and incoming mail alert. Im pretty sure you can change it somewhere. I'll look when I get home. But why it makes people think about antivirus and gives them the option to protect themselves and others by awareness.
Trend House CallAVG.

I use avg and i recomend it to everybody that has a virus.
I do that becouse i went to norton when that BROPIA virus came out and got the remvel from them and AVG and norton said the system was cleaned but avg removed like 19 on mine and 13 on my friends.
I CHOSSE AVG over norton

I have norton on mine and it doesn't remove all of them. Panda online finds alot more than nortons and removes them. I might change to avg myself. And it's free. The only thing that bothers me about avg is the outgoing email thing at the bottom of every email that is sent out. A message about avg. Makes you email look free email looking.
I was referred (and given)

by a friend from here (thanks) to Symantec Corporate AntiVirus 9. Its just amazing, and i freed up on average about 150MBs of RAM on normal after removing Norton System Works 2005 and Norton Internet Security 2005.
And its the first thing to load up when windows starts, so very low recuorce hog.
Symantec Corp. 9 with Windows Connection Firewall, lovin it

You can turn off the AVG message in emails by disabling its scan emails function.
Even though question givven by Chan1975 was NOT about which AV is better - it IS reality - YOU HAVE TO INTUATIVELY see what kind of AV have to be installed... Somewhere have to be SAV v9 - becauce it takes LESS recources. Somewhere have to be Kaspersky - because it recognizes NEW viruses faster... Somewhere have to be a crappy NAV2005 with all of its STUFF in - because a less experienced user have not to worry about some kind of scripts . . . e.t.c. NO 100% good AV is met yet - and I gues - (my opinion) - will NOT be at all . . . teach a user to avoid from stupid dubble clicks on attach and so on . . . It is better !
AVG is Crap. Norton is Crap. Avast Rules
i use avg at work and at home. it works very well. avg has caught viruses that symantic corp and system works did not catch.

I have been using AVG for about a year now. I know it it a lot better than Mcaffee. <---- The shittiest anti virus software ever.

I agree mcfee is crap. I used it for years and at first they where good. Then after they bought Doctor solomons they turned crap. They started messing with the os removing files or something because my os didn't work like crap. I went to nortons, until now and think I am going to avg. Nortons doesn't catch many viruses.

I just can't see paying 50 or 60 dallors a year for just a antivirus program. Not when all the use we get it stop things we don't want on out computer. right? Not when there are free ones out there.

but no i agree there are good free ones out there.

A free AV is worth its price and should only be used when you got NO $$ at all. If you have some $$ stay away from free. While exceptions exist one has to admit there's not much incentive for developers to achive and maintain world class performance when there isn't $$ involved.
Here is link to a supposedly independant test of AV products. They threw a test bed of 76 thousand viruses at every AV product I ever heard of and many I havent. (I got no clue how you even assemble 76 thousand viruses) Anyway...
AVG trapped 72%
AVAST trapped 80%
Norton & Mcafee ran a virtual tie a 93%
Kaspersky topped the list at 99%.
Sure seems like letting 1 out of 4 viruses attack you is a &iss poor showing when other products reduce that to 1 out of 100.

I USE AVG AND HAVE FOR 2+ YEARS AND IT HAS ADVANTAGES THAT NORTON DOES NOT. THE AVG AUTO-UPDATE BEATS NORTON, FOR I USE NORTON AT WORK AND IT LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED. UPDATES ARE LATE AND ONLY THE CORPORATE VERSION IS COMPARABLE TO AVG, BUT YOU HAVE TO SHELL OUT MORE DOUGH FOR THAT OF COURSE.
NO PROBLEMS WITH AVG AND I TRULY QUESTION THE INTEGRITY OF A TEST THAT THREW 76K+ VIRUSES AT AVG AND CONCLUDED THAT NORTON CAUGHT MORE THAN AVG.
JUST BECAUSE IT IS FREE DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE SHYSTERS!!!

so does symantec corporate.
But gets the job done

I use Kaspersky. It's awesome 10 out of 10.

I hate grisoft.
Mcafee is a pile of steaming shit.
It takes a nasa computer to run norton, and it sucks.

I use avg and I've had no problems ... I had used Norton Antivirus 2005 Pro ... too much of a memory hog. It really slowed my system to a crawl.
I switched to avg free edition and it's caught more than the Norton and it's easy on the memory.
Just my personal opinion though.

I rec. heard of antivir from www.free-av.com It got a good reading from a test I saw. My cousin is trying it and likes it alot. It's a free opensourse program.

I also use AVG. I have had no problems with it. I have given it to my parents and friends as well. Free is free and it works. There will ALWAYS be viruses that are not caught. If you are one of the first people to be hit by a new virus, chances are good that you are screwed.

The GUI sucks indeed, but with the newer version I thought it had gotten worse, but I think it sucks slightly less now that I'm used to it

I think it's a good program, but definitly the GUI needs work. That's what turns most people off from it at the start. If they improved the GUI I think it'd be a much better product and more people would use it.
