Apple Computer's next-generation operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, is now complete, AppleInsider has learned.

According to sources, Apple earlier today declared build 8A428 of Tiger 'gold master,' the final development stage. Earlier this week, Apple release a "FC" (final candidate) build to developers and other partners to test the operating system for any last minute "showstoppers." The build reportedly still had a few outstanding issues, but those were not expected to delay Tiger's release and are expected to be fixed in the next free (downloadable) update to the operating system. Companies typically release the 'GM' candidate to manfuacturing for duplication and packaging.

Sources expect Apple to announce the completion of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger as early as tomorrow, April 1st. Some retailers, including Amazon, who is offering a $35 mail-in rebate, have already begun taking pre-orders of Mac OS X Tiger, indicating that they expect to ship the product within 30 days.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Intro Movie?

It appears one user posted the intro video for Apple's Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

The welcome video typically appears on first boot after installation of Mac OS X.

The new video shows a spotlight moving across a blue Mac OS X desktop background displaying the word "Welcome" in several different languages.

The video appears to blank out halfway through, but may simply be the point in which Apple displays registration information dialogs.

I managed to grab the video, you'll need Quicktime to play it and WinRAR to extract the video. Download it here. Enjoy!

You know its sad that Apple can produce such high quality OS's on time.

I would like to ask -why is this sad? Apple is capable of releasing software updates on a timely basis because their OS is designed to run with their own hardware. They create a stable OS and only need to make sure that it works with the last couple of generations of their products -- thus being products based around the IBM PowerPC 970 (G5) or IBM/Motorola 75xx (G4). Mac OS X is based on Unix, as I hope you know, which is why it is naturally a more stable OS than Windows. Apple generally makes the third-party manufacturers write their own drivers which is also why release times are quicker than for Windows. (Correct me if I am wrong.

Microsoft on the other hand needs to develop an operating system that from the basic retail package at Target can successfully be installed and run on a Pentium III to a first generation Pentium 4 to the new P4's with Hyper-Threading and AMD K6s to Athlons to Semprons also to Cyrix based PCs. Not to mention all the third party hardware that drivers to be written for and tested with. Windows is old, bloated, buggy code that needs to be re-worked from the ground up in order to become successfully stable and secure which is most likely what they are doing with Longhorn. Not re-writing it from the ground-up, of course but re-writing huge chunks of it.

Deviating from the main topic of my post here... there was much speculation on Mac OS rumor sites that this version of the Mac OS will be able to run on x86 architecture, although that is highly unlikely.

This post was meant to be unbiased so that it is not "Mac bashing" or "PC bashing". If you would like to read a little more biased opinion of mine, then go to the Apple forum here on this site.

Just don't forget Windows has to deal with thousands of other hardware and software manufactures while Mac OS just have to deal with its Apple hardware which are specifically designed for Mac. wink.gif

Anyone know if the new Safari will be released for 10.3 or just 10.4

Probably both. Most of their new software comes out for both the new OS and the slightly older ones. iChat AV was a good example.

Okay then what were your reasons to say Windows has 1. buggy code and 2. bloated?

Just don't forget 1. Application errors are often misunderstood as Windows errors. 2. Windows XP is still 1 CD. Mac OS X is 2 CDs -- now comes as a DVD too. wink.gif

Well having 1 cd than 2 is more convient for me, dunno about you.

OS X allows you to customize your install just before it begins, to cut down on the space used. Windows doesn't have that. And Windows does have some buggy code, as does OS X, in certain areas. Buggy isn't exactly the word though. More poorly-coded than buggy.

banghead.gif Like the guy said (for the 2nd time)read his post

(1) He's a Mac guy that is trying to be unbiased (And doing a fine jub of it too.)

(2) He's attributing the buggy/bloating to the differences in hardware that the OS's must support.

(3) He's right...Mac makes their own Hardware, so obviously the code can be smaller/simpler and still work (e.g. why error check for things that can't happen).

(4) I'm a Windows fan...So don't start with me... wink.gif
