Full Version: Power Inverter, Car, PS2, Hum Noise

Ok, just bought a 200watt power inverter from crappy tire, plugs in cigarette lighter, hooked up the ps2 to test the audio quality, and I get an annoying "Hum" and lots of static/crackling when the ps2 is turned on. When the ps2 is not plugged into the power inverter there is no hum, and it's no my rca/aux cable, we hooked up an ipod to the rca/aux cable and the sound was crystal clear.

SO my question is: Do I need a special kind of inverter to get rid of the hum and static? I read something about SINE waves and stuff but totally confused.

What i am trying to do is put the ps2 in the car, I also ran another ground from the frame of the car to the inverter to see if it was that but it didn't help at all!!!

Thanks for the help.

where'd you run this ground from? the cig plug terminal or the output from the AC socket? it's gotta be from the AC socket.

also, many electronic stores sell a line filter which should remove much of the ground hum.
Scott
Well the first ground was default cigarette lighter, when that didn't work i put a ground to the fram of the car, firewall, by my ground for my amp in the trunk, and by the the ground for the cd deck, but each place gave me no better result :/ I'm thinking I need a "Pure Sine Wave Inverter" or something ?
quantumAlpha
no, on the inverter, where did you connect the ground wire to? the little black peg in the back or the 3rd hole on the AC socket part?

and a Pure Sine wave inverter might help. if you happen to have access to an oscilloscope and a mighty big resistor, hook them up to the ac out and see if it looks like a sine wave
Scott
I connected it to the black one...the peg

there's the problem. stick it in the round hole of the ac jack, or get one of those little adaptors that have a wire coming out of it to connect to ground. it's often a 3 to 2 adaptor (i believe the ps2 only uses 2 pins)

Correct, ok, well i'll try that tomorrow morning, if it doesn't work i'l head up to radioshack and get a pure sine inverter and see if that helps. I'll post again tomorrow smile.gif
Scott
Put the ground wire in the plug, didn't make a bit of difference, tried in many places. Tried different combinations of ground wires and such, no luck, so i went and got a pure sine wave power inverter 60hz AC, and it still is staticy but not as bad, it's livable. I think i'm going to try and put it directly to the battery and see what difference that makes. thanks for the help.

The LCD Screen arrived today, hooked everything up and guess what, no more humming noise, i think the PS2 was getting feedback on the VIDEO RCA connection, it's plugged in now and no noise at all. smile.gif

Edit: Found batteries, going to make a good video smile.gif!!!

Sweet man!

How much did that lcd run?
Scott
it was $175 CND on ebay (120+ shipping, etc). Works great.

I watched 2 Fast 2 Furious on the way home while driving it's actually not that distracting, didn't really "watch" it, mostly listened to it and glanced over at red lights. There were some kids in a van that stopped beside me while it was playing and they were pointing, i made their day haha.

By the wa this is the power inverter I switched to.

Isn't it illegal to have a movie on in the front of a motor vehicle?

Hey i dun't wanna beat up a dead horse but...

I recently installed a ps2 slim into my car and i think i am having the same problem as you did..

The am powering the ps2 with an inverter.

I am having audio by getting this cord that concerts 2 rca audios into an aux.

My problem is, whenever i have the car running i hearing this lil humming noise? and when i rev the engine the noise gets louder and louder.. Im not sure what it is but it's really annoying and i dun't know how to fix it. When the engine is off, the sound is perfect, no humming or anything at all.

Thank you in advance everyone!
Techneut
This is a well-known problem!
Whenever the engine is running, the generator produces small RadioFrequency spikes onto the internal 12Volts supply...
That is why all car radios have built-in RF filters.
You will have to buy an external RF filter at a car store, and put it in between the 12Volts and your inverter.
Success!
Also, a cheap power inverter, making blocks instead of sinuses, produces the same annoying RF spikes...
Scott
Man this is old.

Make sure all the outputs for the ps2 are connected to something because if they're not, they'll give a static noise as well (make sure video & audio are both plugged in.

You need a Sine Wave inverter for it work work right as well. The hum you hear is from the alternator in your car. You might want to move the audio cables from your car stereo and the PS2 away from any power wires (ie: switch 12v ignition wire and constant 12v as well as any ground wires).
omega101
Thanks for replying guys!,

So i should go out and buy a better power inverter? hm.. Or can i just put that RF filter in.. How would i have to do that? is it just plug and play? and roughly how much is that..

Oh and i got this installed at a audio store, should i bring it back to them and get them to check it out?

Scott
It's not the audio stores responsibility. If the PS2 is getting power then it's hooked up correctly. There's really not other way of doing it.

It's the inverter (change the type) OR the PS2 causing the problem. I would suggest trying another inverter (one that produces a true sine wave).

The audio store is going to tell you to pound sand pretty much. Really there is nothing they can do about how the car works. Technically this is normal to tell you the truth with regular power inverters and plugging game devices into them.

You could try better cables too, like the Monster ones (although I really don't think they'll be too much better), make sure you are using shielded cables.

The static will never go away completely. It's always going to be there in the background, maybe just not as loud.

How do you have the power inverter plugged in? Through the cigarette lighter or directly connected to the battery?

Do you have an LCD screen in your car? Is the video cable hooked up to it yet? If it's disconnected you're going to get a hum.
omega101
Oh, i have a 2004 TL with navi...

I bought this module that has 2 video sources.. one to backup camera and one to ps2..

I guess the onli solution is to buy another inverter? They have it hooked up directly to the battery ... Since theres nothing going into the cig lighters..

I am using monster cables right now..

I tried looking for a cable that hooks up to the ps2 directly to the cig lighter, they use to make it.. but i can't find it anymore.. would that fix it?
Scott
There's probably not going to be too much you can do at this point then.

The inverter should have come with a cigarette lighter plug on it (or one that you can connect to it).
