I'm currently looking for a new FTP server app. I'm using Cerberus right now, and it's nice, but i'm looking for something that's more robust. While it is useful, and does what I need it to for now, it is lacking in the features area. What I want is a nice FREE ftp server app that has a nice selection of tools. Thanks
Hasin
im not too familiar with FTP server and programs,
but id recommend SmartFTP wink.gif

i dont know if it does the job your looking for, but its defenately a great program smile.gif
DangerousDave86
warFTP.

Serv-U, not exactly free, but it's all good. wink.gif

@hasin: smartftp is a client not a server, but thanks

@dd86: i'll try warftp, it looks good.

@singh: the personal edition is free, and i'll try it too.

i also found zFTPServer Suite that looks promising. i'll be playing with each to find out which one i like. thanks for the suggestions.

IIS is free and I find that I can do so much with it.
Heart_Attack
thanks, but i think i've settled on zFTP Server Suite. It's free and has a nice user interface that allows me to do much more than any other free FTP i've seen. i can even set up user groups if i want, so it's working nicely for me. thanks for all the help.

Does it install as a service or is there a system tray icon that is always running? What is its memory footprint in taskmanager?

My default Windows XP MCE has about 50 processes running and I managed to reduce that down to 35 but then I installed all the apps that I liked and wanted and its back up to 60 processes [I can't believe between MSN, AOL and Yahoo Instant messengers they take up about 60MB in memory by themselves]. I am going to do some cleaning house in a minute which will require analyzing memory footprints and looking for the best replacments or reconfigurations for all the apps I like.
Heart_Attack
It has both the tray icon (for easy launching of the main window) and you can set it as a service if you want. I chose the service and with that set, it runs two processes in windows. One is the SYSTEM service which is using 4 MB memory and the other is the Admin Console which is launched by my user (that I think is the tray icon) which uses 3.5 MB memory. It's quite nice. If you're cheap (like me) and don't want to spend 20-30 bucks on a FTP Server app, this one is nice. Here's the main page.

http://zftpserver.serveftp.com/

the site has nice bandwidth too, so a dl on broadband shouldn't take but a few seconds. it took me (on rr) only 5.

also, if you have that many im clients, i'd suggest trillian as a replacement. look at it here.

good luck with the cleanup. i know how much of a bitch it can be.

So does Serv-U all you got to do is find it wink.gif or in the case of the pro version "unlock" it.
Heart_Attack
i try not to "unlock" things. i try to stay legit, so zFTP was my best bet there. thanks for the idea though. if i'm ever looking to pay for an ftp, i'll definitely look at that one first.

warFTP runs as service and has a remote admin tool. Also to you previous comment, it has a fantastic user management system. Hierarchical with tree view management, works kinda like NTFS permissions, except a little easier to manage.
Heart_Attack
@dd86: i looked for warftp, but all i found was a command line client. do you have a link to the one you are talking aobut?
DangerousDave86
noexpression.gif I've never even seen the command line client! lol. I'll see if I can hook you up.
dkreifus
i use ServU. I have 2.5 because I don't like 4.0. But it works great. It's simple and efficient.
Taco Bell
@dkreifus: I also use Serv-U 2.5 as I bought it years ago and I don't have a reason to upgrade the latest version. This one does everything I need.
DangerousDave86
this is what you need. Once installed you should get a tray icon to launch the daemon manager, and your sorted.
Heart_Attack
OK, I've installed warFTP, and I think it's set up how I want it. For those of you who want to know, it leaves about a 8 MB footprint total in your memory.

@DD86: thanks for the hookup man, that really is nicer than zFTP, but one question. you mentioned remote administration. where is this set up? i can't find it.

@dkreifus: LOL, I like the new avatar man. count the 1ups for me would ya. laugh.gif
Prelapsarian
FileZilla is nice and easy, has a client and server. Separate programs of course.

Does it not come up once you finish installing? All you gotta do is find the exe in the program files folder and move it to another PC
Heart_Attack
well, i'm not sure what that meant. do you mean that if the ftp server is running, then the remote daemon has already started? if that's so, then how do i connect to it once it is started.
DangerousDave86
with warFTP the server is an NT service, so theres no interface, any interface you see is the admin client (which as far as i know you can use remotely). Remote admin is on by default I guess as its the only way to administer the server (bar API calls). Haven't really played with it for a while but it hasn't changed since i used it last.
