I know this has already been discussed, but with my zonealarm at 80mb ram sometimes, is there a lighter but still functional firewall? Not counting routers, of course

i use sygate (found here) it's nice and it doesn't use that much memmory. it also allows you to program specific ports (unlike zonealarm free) so, yeah, that's my pic.

I'm a novice when it comes to most things computer and the like. Sygate is lightweight and have never had a prob with it. It clocks in around 7.5 megs on my machine.

Tiny Personal Firewall. Running on my system with only 2.7Mbs of memory in use. It's not made anymore because Kerio bought it and made it into KPF. Personally though I use TPF for monitoring only and use XPs built in firewall. Maybe it uses more RAM when in use with lots of rules, but I don't know.

Windows Firewall tongue.gif

It actually works. No joke smile.gif

edit: im assuming you have SP2 right? (or server2003 sp1) If you do, then just turn it on and itll do the rest for you. It acts like a good software firewall in almost every way smile.gif

But really... It was discussed before - and the best answer was HARDWARE FIREWALL. I did not think so much about it - but I had to use these things AND for companys AND for home users - GREAT. Even the cheepest Edimax which coast about USD 40.- is O.K. TRY ;0)

Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0.14A. It is very configurable, traces IP addresses to host, logs incoming and outgoing with customisable rules, works with WinXp SP2, and nothing gets out without your explicit permission. This was released in October of 2001. It may be old, but it is still damn good! I have used nothing but this since 2001, and I have had absolutly no problems with it.

Well, atm i'm using win2k advanced server (don't ask why) and sygate is working well for me. Before though i was using the built in one, and i have to say i quite like it. I'll probably go back to that when i reinstall xp

Look 'n' Stop only 7 MB right now.

I AGREE, use a hardware firewall or use windows Firewall wall, i used Windows Firewall it to protect a shared connection shared with about 30 machines and its worked fine no machine infected.

If inbound blocking is the only thing you want out of a software firewall then XP firewall is indeed an option.

I use ZoneAlarm, but Im not sure on its lightness and it can be a pain in the ass to use..=/
