hey, i'm wondering how to copy a file off of a CD without performing CRC checksum on it. anyone know?

In that case, I'm not sure why you'd want to force it given that file is corrupt, incomplete, etc.
However, I don't know of a method/utility that can accomplish that feat.
well, it's a part of a RAR archive of all my holiday photos, and i'm trying to recoever as much as possible. it turns out i can open parts of RAR archives without copyign all parts into the same directory though, so only the corrupt parts of the archive have been lost, which thankfully looks like only one or two photos.

With winrar, i think you can run the recover RAR operation which will get all the undamaged files out into another files

Yup aslong as the recovery record is include.
QUOTE
RAR archive format supports a special type of redundant information called a recovery record. If an archive has a recovery record, it can be repaired even in case of physical data damage due to floppy disk failure or data losses of any other kind. The ZIP archive format does not support a recovery record.
the recovery file was not there

but it's all good, i only lost one photo (one good one unfortunately), but i'm working on possibly getting it back; i think i left the archives on the computer i used to burn the CDs
Well with the new versions of WinRAR the recovery file isn't needed. But I don't know if that's true of archives created with older version of the software.
