So just for fun I downloaded and installed Novell Netware 6.5 trial on a Dell OptiPlex GX1.

Man this thing is crawling even though I pumped memory like crazy! Is it supposed to be like this?

(It had 1GHz P3 and 576MB RAM)

Netware is a slow networking software. It may be slow, but it's damn powerful. If you don't need the netware functions, then Microsoft environment is much faster, but to play with, it'll be slow until you remove it smile.gif

My school do the whole netware/novell thing. Can be some at times, but if you set it up right, it really secure and quite fast. Just depends on the load (of users etc). I was asked the head of IT why we didn't go with a windows network, he told me they did for a few months but one of the techies ran a l0pht crack on the server and cracked it within 24hrs. So they swicthed to novell/netware, it was a real hassle setting it up. At one point no one could login - so they now use this room (101) as a test subject.

How much RAM does the machine have? Netware is (and always has been ) a RAM hog.
