I stole the transparent outline from Chris123NT. The drive is an icon converted to a PNG. The background is a Black - Blue - Black gradient. The glossy effect is from a tutorial

ok, well i got the gradient thing....but i was wondering....when i opened PS again...and i tried the gradient for something else, there are no colours! i changed them the gradient editor, but it stays black and grey shades...help!

I learnt this from oldecrow.

to summarise:
make a selection around the top part of your item you want to add gloss effect to.

then cut the selection so it looks like a crescent thinggi *screenshot*

and then do a white - black gradient *screenshot* on a new layer.

Then 'screen' the layer and whalla.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

To aid in this, just to make it easier... here's a modified form of my source file.

That's a known problem, Microsoft has their heads up their ass on that count

It definatly looks better than your first one! I think the background gradient could be improved dramatically! But the rest looks very good! I see your applying layer styles well now.
