Full Version: Opera is Freeware Without Ads

Opera is now free without ads!

Opera removed their integrated ad banners and made their software freeware! This change came out under version number 8.50 and is able to run on Vista too. Opera also left the Java out of the package. Opera will now use the default runtime from your pc.

This browser is perfect for those who prefer to use an alternative to Internet Explorer.

Yes! This is great! I think this is because of the overwhelming response of the reg key party. Opera realised that people dont really want ads, and that more people would use their browser if it didnt have ads, it made me swith to opera! Im a full time opera user now!

Firefox seems to have the weirdest memory leak on my PC. So I use Opera. Its got a really nice interface! there are a few things i dont like though.
Jizzylax
hmm i'll have to alternate between 3 browsers now .. IE, FF, and Opera. opera is somewhat cool

ditched firefox now lick.gif

No more FF for me then..

This bug annoys the hell out of me: If you leave an intance of firefox running for a long period of time (without using the computer) you will find that FF starts eating away your memory for some odd reason.. urgh.. I always forget to close it and when I come back my (crappy) computer is messed up.
Sinbad
I'm still using Firefox. It was hard enough to keep myself switched away from IE. Okay so I lied, it wasn't. But I still like Firefox.

It's been a while since I've messed with Opera. I see their page rendering still isn't perfect, but it's much better than it once was. It looks like it's getting close to FireFox quality. I wonder does this mean more competition for Internet Explorer, or more competition for FireFox? Maybe FireFox's ten percent will have to be split with Opera. wink.gif

Either way, I'm not complaining about more choices.
Scott
If Opera wants to gain more users in the community it's going to have to launch the browser with a new name and version number. It's going to have the change the name from Opera to something else. When I think of the Opera Browser I think of crap. Seriously. It never worked right (page rendering issues), crashing in previous versions. Firefox has held up, and I hate to say it but IE isn't "that" bad is it? Opera needs to come out with a new ad campaign like the crew from Mozilla did with Firefox. Opera needs to say to the people "Free, Reliable and Easy to use". They need a new logo and a complete re-launch of their product. People are going to see "Opera, Now Free Without Ads" and say "Well it didn't work right with ads, and I hated it, etc" so they're not going to try it. The ones who will try it might be pleased with the product but will ultimately go back to FF or IE because they know it works properly and there is the compatibility issues (page rendering).

Sure FF and IE don't always render the pages properly, but they do a better job then Opera..IMO.
HybridShadow
No it won't need to change its name.
Opera is so much better and secure than Firefox

Opera wont take the ads like "Free, Reliable and Easy to use" because 1 people would complain that they are copying firefox.
and 2 because Firefox has been prooved to being less secure than IE and Opera and has the memory leak - yes if you use older version you don thave the leak but then you are highly vulnerable!
Face Firefox sucks and is losing its place as the best alternative.
I cant stand the ads for Firefox everywhere thats what made me hate it in the first place, i tried it and it ran like crap so i REMOVED it from my system and it was never there again!
Scott
I'm using firefox right now and have been using it since it came out. It works great. Awesome with the Adblock plugin installed and loads pages faster then IE. The only thing that doesn't work is Windows Update.

Opera may be more secure... it's an older more worked on product.

Where is your proof that Firefox is less secure then internet explorer?

Imagine if all the hacker focus in IE suddenly went to Firefox then what would be the safest browser!

You know, for someone on the news crew you're not really that up-to-date on the news, are you?

About FF loading pages faster than IE -- are you kidding me? FF takes yonks to load anything, not to mention how much memory it takes up, it's the most obese browser i've ever come across; I wouldn't be caught dead using firefox. Good luck with it though, just don't come complaining to me when your bank account is emptied.

Umm.. for someone being a douche, you are quite good at it.

FF is faster then IE, once tweaked. And FF is less secure? Maybe so, but Mozilla actually fixes those problems within days of their discovery. Unlike MS, who uh... yeah decided to skip the monthly patch day. That and extensions are awesome.

Oh yeah, and about it taking up a lot of memory... That's already been fixed, plus ram is fucking cheap these days. Work a few hours and get another stick or 2 of 512. No need to be stingy.
Audioboxer
some good points sinbad...

firefox once tweaked up is noticeably faster than internet explorer... the adblocking probably helps speed up things a bit as well.

i find that when im using a browser im not in need of 500mb free ram anyhow... i mean im sitting with 768, why not use it. once i play a game or something, then yeah ill close firefox and get it back.

ps. by the way im using opera lick.gif
HybridShadow

Microsoft skipped that patch because it had a quality issue, you don't even know what it was for!

Firefox maybe faster once tweaked but how many people do you know that know how to set each setting?
It also takes alot longer to load the program unlike IE which does have the advantages of being integrated.

Lets not make this thread about Firefox, we dont wanna give it more publicity for the hackers (It gets enough ads all over the place and its bloody annoying)!

1. I'm not up to date on the news because I haven't been here since Jul 3 2005, 22:14, and I don't want to talk about why.

2. "Firefox maybe faster once tweaked but how many people do you know that know how to set each setting?" Most actually do. The people who download Firefox are savvy computer people or have somewhat of an idea of what they are doing with their computer or else they wouldn't have downloaded it in the first place. My grandmother knows how to install the Adblock plugin, and she was the one who showed me it one day while I was at her house. I've been using it since. My grandmother has a total of 3 1/2 years computer experience.

3. "Microsoft skipped that patch because it had a quality issue, you don't even know what it was for!" Quality issue? Isn't the bug in the software a quality issue? They know their own code, surely they can fix it. Do you know the exact problem why it was delayed besides a "quality issue"?

4. "Lets not make this thread about Firefox, we dont wanna give it more publicity for the hackers (It gets enough ads all over the place and its bloody annoying)!" Umm hackers eh? I'm sure the "hackers" knew about Firefox before you did and started working on it before people started to download it a lot. The point about the ads? I personally don't see any ads for it anywhere. I mean there is the occaisional button or link to Firefox but isn't that the same with IE? Who all remembers the buttons "This page is designed for IE only" etc.?

5. "About FF loading pages faster than IE -- are you kidding me? FF takes yonks to load anything, not to mention how much memory it takes up, it's the most obese browser i've ever come across; I wouldn't be caught dead using firefox. Good luck with it though, just don't come complaining to me when your bank account is emptied." Well I have "http://board.iexbeta.com/" loaded in both IE and FF right now. IE is using 30mb of RAM while FF is using 24mb of RAM. Firefox loads pages faster then IE on my system, and on many other systems that I have used it on. Bank account emptied? I constantly buy products on eBay, check my PayPal account and check my online banking and have never had a problem.

6. "Face Firefox sucks and is losing its place as the best alternative. I cant stand the ads for Firefox everywhere thats what made me hate it in the first place, i tried it and it ran like crap so i REMOVED it from my system and it was never there again!" Could this be due to other software you have installed on the system? Or your system specs? I mean, it runs fine on my machine (P3 850, 256mb Pc 100 Ram) My other machine (which I traded for a laptop then sold the laptop to pay for a down payment on car insurrance) was a 2500+ Athlon XP @ 2.2ghz (OC'd), 512MB (256X2 DC). Firefox ran sweet on that system, and I didn't notice a speed difference in loading times (program starting up) then I did with IE. Firefox still loaded pages quicker. I don't have slow internet either, I have an average 10Mbit connection with Eastlink. http://www.eastlink.ca/

So in the end I guess it is user preference. Same with cars. I love Nissans and Hondas. I drive a 1991 Nissan Stanza and love it to death (even though it's almost a junker). Other people might hate the car, who knows. Just depends what experiences you have had with a particular product. Same with experiences in stores or with women/men.

Thanks.

Scott.

Would be interesting to see. I don't see why Opera wouldn't update the browser. I think they will continue to update it to stay in competition with IE and FF. It's going to be an on-going battle, and we may never see a final winner, but we all know who lost... *cough* netscape *cough*

yeah, you know when netscape and aol became partners the browser was shit. it was shit long before then though (netscape hasn't been good since version 4 builds)

Fair enough i guess you have to have atleast one good comment!

2. "Firefox maybe faster once tweaked but how many people do you know that know how to set each setting?" Most actually do. I know alot of people who have has firefox and not know howto onfigure what. Thatsth god thing about IE, easy to use no extra configuring needed.

3. "Microsoft skipped that patch because it had a quality issue, you don't even know what it was for!" Quality issue? Isn't the bug in the software a quality issue? They know their own code, surely they can fix it. Do you know the exact problem why it was delayed besides a "quality issue"?

Fair enough but still you cant hold one little call back because of that, Mars/snickers got a callback (in NSW, australia) from a threat and people still eat them (i do)

4. "Lets not make this thread about Firefox, we dont wanna give it more publicity for the hackers (It gets enough ads all over the place and its bloody annoying)!" Umm hackers eh? I mean there is the occaisional button or link to Firefox but isn't that the same with IE? Who all remembers the buttons "This page is designed for IE only" etc.?

I havent seen any ads like that around. Im talking about now not years and years ago!

5. "About FF loading pages faster than IE -- are you kidding me? Fairenough - i have done tests and found otherwise, - even though the Javascript flaw was fixed (even though many people still use old versions) It exposed my credit card that cold be read by anysite also bercause firefox never encrypted my banks page either. IE Always did

6. "Face Firefox sucks and is losing its place as the best alternative. Its not my specs i have Intel P4 2.8ghz - 1gb ram - i have 24mbit ADSL wih adam internet www.adam.com.au
And even though the page loading time was not even rarely there, when running ALOT in the background IE still outperformed firefox. Also tests like that cant always be good, if yo have to browsers loading one page one would get higher proiority over bandwidth wouldnt it, also what about sererlag and all of those things!

Yes it comes down to user preference, but i cant stand it when people gve false information by saying Firefox i the safest, fastest browser out (not saying you said this but others have)

Either way i will continue to recommend Opera to people tha dont want to use IE.!

lol awesome read. I respect your opinions ignite.

It really is user preference. About the ads for each browser though... It's sorta the same thing, I mean years ago people always saw ads for IE, now it's firefox, times have changed. I see the occaisional ad for Opera too. Personally I don't see many firefox ads, I can't even remember the last time I saw one. It really just depends what you do on the net I suppose... Me: Mostly porn, PSP, Xbox and stuff like that.

Well i'll be back later tonight, school time... (go go college).
HybridShadow
Scott, this is great we are comparing the technical aspects of our point of views on software, i do agree that the firefox ads are dying down (i havent seen many for a while - mostly in peoples sigs lol)

i guess if you go to sites like that its understandable to rather use firefox (no activex request lol)

I guess each to there own.
kmenzel
On the topic of Opera, IE, and Firefox (which this thread seems to have become...) I thought it was VERY interesting that both Firefox and IE rendered the "getting started using opera" page correctly, but it took a refresh to get opera to render the page correctly.
