I've been trying to convert some AVI files I have to Mpeg2 files, so I can watch them on my Tivo.
I used WinAVI Video converter, and the image comes out really fuzzy with lines through. A portion of the bottom gets cut a bit, and the top has alot of black on it.
I'm not that familair with video conversions like this, but I can't imagine what options would have caused this.
If not WinAVI, does anyone know of a good simple converter?

in winavi you can set the codec to be used... might wanan instal a codec pack and use a codec of your likings...
if that does not work, you might wanna try the nero stuff...

One, stay away from codec packs! Most people have nothing but bad luck with them, I did (with Nemo). Instead, use Gspot to determine what codecs you have available for each video (avi) file and download the codecs you need individually. Two, what version of WinAVI are you using? the newest, 7.1 seems to work great so I you're using an older one, I'd try this one instead. Three, do the .vob files play fine on your pc after converting (through WinAVI)? I use VLC player to check mine. BTW, how do you use Tivo to view these, never heard of that.

I use Tivo Desktop to transfer them to my Tivo.
They play fine on my computer. I'm not familiar with using different codecs and such for this kinda thing. I'm pretty new to conversions.

people mostly have problems with codec pack cuz they install 10 diffrent codec packs that does not work, i tend to install k-lite mega codec pack

Can you give details of the MPEG2 file that's been created?
i.e. Resolution, bitrate etc

Video: MPEG2 Video 608x336 29.97fps 9000Kbps
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 224Kbps
Video: d9L
File size: 653 MB (seems small...)
The file extension was mpg.
I just made a new one with a different program. I haven't tested it yet...
Video: MPEG2 Video 608x336 (4:3) 29.97fps 8568Kbps
Audio: MPEG Audio 44100Hz stereo 128Kbps
Video: d9L
File size: 1185MB
The file extension was mpeg

I figure the second one may work a little better. Sometimes I've seen MPEG2's with 48000Hz audio causing problems.
You'd be better off keeping the audio to either MPEG1 Layer II 44000Hz, or AC3 for use with MPEG2 video.

I tried the second one. It displayed properly, and the audio was good, but it was off.
I am attempting again to make another version that is formatted mpeg2 with NTSC for DVD settings

I used to use SLD Codec, i think its enough. codec duplication could lead to alot of problems like turned upside down image, or delay and could cause expolorer crashes as well.
