The Cupertino, Calif., computer maker is recalling packs shipped with certain of its 12-inch iBook G4 and 12-inch and 15-inch PowerBook G4 notebooks, citing a fire hazard. The Apple recall—which only affects the G4 notebooks and does not involve more recent MacBook and MacBook Pro models—comes just 10 days after Dell recalled 4.1 million battery packs whose cells were also made by Sony. Apple said on Aug. 15 that it was evaluating the status of its systems.
The computer maker, which is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on the recall, said in a statement that owners should stop using the recalled battery packs immediately by removing them and switching to AC power.
Apple said it had received nine reports of batteries overheating. Of them, two reports of involved people receiving minor burns from handling overheated computers. No serious injuries were reported.
The affected batteries came with Apple's 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 and were also sold as replacements.
Customers seeking more information can contact Apple via its Web site or call at (800) 275-2273, the company said in a statement.
