The Democrats took the House and are on the verge of the Senate as well...

Finally we might make some headway in the last 2 years of the Bush Kingdom.
Singh400
Would somebody care to explain the whole system?

Like over hear we have the house of lords and house of commons, and any new bills/laws are sent between the 2 houses until a resoultion is found.

Is it the same sort of process in the US? What are the "houses" called?

Wikipedia has a fairly good explaination Here

Well Bush still has the Veto, so that should stop them from getting a lot of their crap through. That is, unless he gives in to a lot of it like he did by letting Rumsfeld go. Things certainly won't be getting any better in Iraq with Democrats in power. Bin Laden and the terrorists must be rejoicing today.

Leaving international policies aside, whats life like in the US since Bush came to power? How employment gone up or down? What about gas prices? Whats your national health service like?

The economy has been going great, and gas prices have dropped recently (of course, compared to other countries they have never really been that high). The quality of the healthcare is good too since it's not some big nationalized system.

Basically, things have been going great since Bush got in power. That's what makes this Democrat takeover of Congress a bit concerning. I'm not particularly interested in higher taxes.

However, if you ask a democrat, they will obviously say the exact opposite of what Chug said. They will tell you very little is going great. rolleyes.gif

Parties aside, I find it very hard to agree with Chug when he says that Iraq is going well. unsure.gif

Yeah, they're blaming their problems on Bush. And no, I did not say that Iraq was going well. I said that it certainly won't get any better with Democrats in power.

That's basically how it works in the U.S. Democrats stand for higher taxes, bigger government, and more regulations. Republicans stand for lower taxes, smaller government, and fewer regulations. Take your pick.

Though it can get pretty complex when you compare all the beliefs and positions of the parties. I'm not a pure conservative myself, but more of a libertarian or capitalist.

It seems to me that religion plays a MASSIVE part in the US government. IMO this is a bad thing. Religion has no place in politics.

What universe do you live in? How can you say the economy's been doing great? The house market went down...Repossessions, Foreclosures, bankruptcies are very high, consumer spending is down due to the STILL high gas prices... And yes I agree gas prices did go down, but do you enjoy paying $2.00/gal or more for YOUR gas guzzling SUV? I don't. I remember paying $.80/gal when Clinton was in power. Bush and his croanies pockets are getting lined from you and me. National Health Care? I could wish... Then maybe I could afford the health care. Every two weeks, if I had health care I would be paying 550 bucks...With all my deductions, and child support I would only have 300 bucks left... My housing expense alone is 1300/month in South Jersey. I don't think we are doing that well... But I must be a Democrat and am blind to reality.
raum
Why would you pay so much for health care? You must be kidding or very ill. I work in Princeton, NJ and live Northeast of Philly. Every two weeks, I pay less than 43 dollars for medical, dental, and vision full coverage to personal PPO.

you can say what you want about the economy, but last week more than 20,000 people cancelled their unemployment benefits due to new jobs.

You may also want to notice that spending is down but because investing is so high the Dow has consistently hit record numbers and holidays are around the corner...

The biggest market indicators are that things are going OK, with about 2% of potential growth being actualized, because we have to make sure we don't blow other countries out of the water even more.

if you by chance are not making due in the US, you need education and discipline. This is the strongest poistion of the global theatre in terms of economic positioning. Our homeless have more income than some countries, simply from panhandling. I know someone who is complaining about the market, and he has two kids by two different women, one an ex-wife, and one a unmarried girlfriend. He makes more than 65,000 a year, and insists on eating out and taking trips to Atlantic City. The market doesn't have provision for bad personal choices.

As for Bush and his cronies... they do not impact the gas price as much as you might think. Neither does Exxon or other any Titan in the petroleum. Exxon doesn't even hedge their losses, for fear of regulatory action. What drives the cost up is foreign investment strategies in hedging options and futures in the NYSE NYMEX and DOW.

and that was determined by economic hitmen working as lobbyists, not members of Congress or the president. These people are the ones who allowed foreign countries to play into our futures, in exchange for letting US corporations buy foreign debt. This racked up money back into the coffers of the US, so Clinton was seen as a master of the budget balance as our deficit shrank due to corporate payback of debt from foreign countries. This has happened for at least 13 years, since the institution of the Debt-Equity swaps in Latin America began.

This empowered the VERY rich in this country and others to become even more rich, and assisted in an increase in the US coffers as well. it also allowed publicly traded corporations to basically BUY COUNTRIES, and effectively dominate their economies. So, the global economy DID grow, but the number of people affected positively shrank considerably. Thus, the need for govt. representation of those who failed to compete for the benefit of the market led to Democratic control of the disadvantaged public self-interest.

So, I hate to say this, but if you are unable to adjust to the market, your loss is a product of the natural selection of the heartless market that will ultimately stabalize the global economy, which is our greatest hope for peace. it is only when the US creates a distribution of wealth of ITS OWN ACCORD that we will see a dissolution of class, and that will not happen through taxation.

Taxes are like the energy fed into a machine, the machine will never yield the same amount of energy fed into it.

Slightly OT: I'm generally a conservative/libertarian, but I'm not a big fan of Bush. My problem with him is that he wants to lower taxes (great), but at the same time, spend billions of dollars. Can't have both, just doesn't work.

you got it all wrong there.

"terrorism" likes the republicans, without the latter there might be less of the former. so by all means: if you want terrorism to exist, if you want its leaders to have a raison d'etre, then do vote republican.
