Maybe Windows recognized it as a standard DVD reader?
If that is the problem, uninstall the drive from device manager and reboot. When you log back in, it'll re-install the drive again - hopefully with the correct drivers.
You might wanna take a look at the manual and only use recommend media. Try switching between +R and -R formats.
One thing you haven't mentioned is the make and model of the drive? It might be a known issue with the drive and fix might be available.
Edit* Just had another though. Are you using Windows to burn stuff to disc or a 3rd party application? If you using Windows to burn, then you need to start the 'IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service' service, found in services.msc.
