That's what I mean. We just got 2.0, and they're already releasing alphas of 3.0

So they are supposed to just stop developing because a new version came out?

No, but maybe work on 2.x rather than a jump to 3.0

nah i think they are doing this cuz the improvements are "this" great to raise the major no. 1 up
Already? Seems like 2.0 just released.

2.0 WAS just released. I think they're trying to stay ahead of all the flaws/security issues Firefox REALLY has now that it has become as popular (why that is, I'll never know!) as it has.

What's the difference? It's just a name.
If they called it version 2.5, or 2.329943, or 3.0... if it's the exact same piece of software, what's the difference?

2.5 usually states its version 2 upgraded, version 3.0 states, hey i'm new extra spectacular new functionalities!

Exactly what Dutch said. Versioning is not just naming.
X.00 indicated a whole new change to the softare. ie: Windows XP=> Vista. IE 6.0 => IE 7.0.
1.X indicates a small upgrade. Maybe a new feature or 2, some bug fixes, etc. 1.0.X or further indicates a patch or bug fix. Not a serious performance enhancement.
Thats why Adobe Reader is 7.0.8, not 7.8. Its a minor upgrade, not a feature improvement or addition.

spoils the fun and tells he already got Adobe Reader 8 installed ,

It seems that they are focus on the performance this time, in fact version 2 have alot of memory problems.
