Steve Jobs revealed a new widescreen iPod, phone, and Internet communicator, and it is all one device. The new iPhone, measuring 11/16" of an inch thick, integrates all the features of modern phones, and an iPod. The iPhone features a 3.5" touch screen, so no stylus is needed. The resolution is 160 pixels/inch.

The iPhone is a PDA, with calendars, itunes, contacts, emails and notes. It has a cradle to sync and runs on OS X. Many of the features include: volume controls, bottom speaker, ambient light sensor to save power, ipod connector, 2 mp camera, touch scroll wheel.

It can detect if it is being held landscape or portrait, and will dim the display while being held to the ear.

The phone is on Cingular's network.

Hell, even *I* want one. But it's a product that everyone wants, but nobody will buy.

First there's that price, no f'ing way. I can get a VX6700 or Mototrola Q that can do almost everything it can do (albeit not as stylishly) for $99. And the tie to Cingular ("The company with the fewest dropped calls [and service areas] in the country") is idiotic.

There's also the lack of any mention of being able to sync with Outlook/Exchange which will make it useless to business and enterprise users. What market does Apple expect to sell this to? Really rich people who don't need good cell service or ties to their business? So they only need to make, what, 1000 of them?

It's sexy though...

I'm curious about where you can get a XV6700 for $99... Mine cost a bit more than that... huh.gif

I'd say that the price they are asking for the device is "about right" considering it comes with 4gb or 8gb of storage. I had to buy a 2Gb mini-SD card separately.

It probably won't become very popular, mainly because of the cost for the device and service, but I'm sure it will make geeks everywhere happy. I know my XV6700 sure does. biggrin.gif

hmmmm, i really want one, but not with cingular (i expected them to make a GSM phone, how could they turn down a world market?) and not with that price. up till today i kept saying 'i just want to see it, but i wont be interested in buying one' now im very interested in buying one, but i wont be... (that windows mobile Treo looks nice...)

Our enterprise contract has the Q or 6700 for $99 (after rebate) as of last month smile.gif I'll be getting one this fall once my contract comes up for renewal. smile.gif

I'm on Alltel... so I can't even consider that phone anyway.

Great phone but the price....... Face it, it's just a PDA but instead of Windows CE its running Widget OS 1.0. Also for that price i want to have built in gps navigation, like the HTC P3300.
I think that will be the future of phones, gps navigation will become standard.
Illrigger
It's even LESS than that, DJP. This just in from Engadget:
QUOTE
And the reality slowly sets in about what the iPhone is and is not. Noted analyst and Engadget pal Michael Gartenberg stated that the iPhone is first party software ONLY -- i.e. not a smartphone by conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that allows software to be installed. That means hungry power-users -- you know, those people ready and willing to plunk down $600 for an 8GB musicphone -- won't be able to extend the functionality of their phone any more than Apple (but thankfully not Cingular) dictates. Other unfortunate realities about the device:
• No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
• No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
• No expandable memory.
• No removable battery.
• No Exchange or Office support.
Even the hardcore Mac people are now starting to wonder what the point of this thing is now. More or less, ALL it is, is an iPod with a phone that can browse the web (ineffecively, due to screen res) and use a few Widgets. Sure, it looks good, but in the end, it doesn't DO much that we can't already do with any decent vCast or iTunes phone for half or less the price - and in many cases it actually does LESS.

In other words, the shiny wore off the shit, and now all that's left is the smell....
Chugworth
First-party software only? Wow, that really sucks. It annoys me how much media attention this thing is getting, especially since most PDA phones can do so much more than this.
potterface
but it comes with those trademark white headphones (that get people mugged)!!!!!
that's why I will buy it. that and the ad campaign that goes with it will probably be everything a consumer whore such as myself will eat up!
Teelie
Meh. I don't even use my regular mobile phone that much let alone my mp3 player to justify that.

hmmmm, actually watching the keynote now... did i hear steve say they're going to eventually be making a 3g (aka CDMA) version???
Man1k3n
I watched the demos for this thing and I think its really cool. I work for best buy and cell mp3s and cellphones, so I was anticipating this release on the 8th because thats when apple has their little shindig each year. I think the phone is great; however the major setback to the phone will most likely be the data packaging in order to do everything that Job's showed everyone and what Apple advertises. You're talking broadband internet access and minutes to make phone calls so you're looking at a phone bill close to two hundred bucks a month, if its any cheapter than that I will be completely shocked.

CDMA is not necessarily 3g.

And GSM is the most widely used standard worldwide. CDMA doesn't have a fraction of the world market GSM does.

Plus, sim cards fucking own.

One day after the announcement, the first lawsuit, courtesy of Cisco who already market an "iphone":

This should be interesting...

Thirteen Reasons to Doubt the iPhone Hype:

1. Why no 3G compatibility?
2. Does the lack of 3G matter if the iPhone has Wi-Fi?
3. What's under the hood
4. Can you download directly from iTunes?
5. Just what does Apple mean by "it runs OS X"?
6. Will it actually be called the iPhone?
7. Who's this phone for, anyway? Who can afford this thing?
8. Will Apple give the user any freedom?
9. How much more than the unit price will the iPhone cost?
10. Is this another iLock-in strategy?
11. Just how useful is the touch screen?
12. Will early adopters be the only adopters?
13. What goes into a cell-phone purchase?

Answer are here (ie Source). Answer to #7 is great lol.
