Cisco Systems announced Wednesday it has filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. over the name of the iPod manufacturer's new mobile phone. The company filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in California seeking to prevent Apple from infringing upon Cisco's registered trademark for the name iPhone.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new product — which he called the iPhone —on Tuesday at the opening of the annual Macworld electronics show.
But even as Jobs was making the announcement, the question of naming rights had still been unresolved.

Good, Apple needs to be taken down a peg or two. Far too cocky for a company. Didn't they try to copyright pod before?
Lets hope Cisco gives em what for.

I am actually surprised those retards at Apple still went with the iPhone name respite the fact they knew that iPhone name was trademarked by Cisco.

Wow, it has been reported since
last year that Apple does not own the rights to the "iPhone" name. Are they overly arrogant, or are they just plain stupid?

My guess is arrogant. They knew the name was patented and in fact had been in talks with Cisco over use of the name before before this announcement. Obviously the talks failed so Apple thought they'd just act like they can do what they please.

My avatar is cute

They could have a shot at it though, since Cisco's iPhone is a completly different product and the Apple iPhone is not meant to compete with it. If I was Cisco I wouldn't really care. Technically the name is the same but the phone is made for cellphone companies. Does Cisco even think they have a chance with their iPhone, come on. They're just doing it for publicity, that's all it is.
Well Apple should just change the name to iTel/iCell/iMobile/iComm/iTalk/iDial/iSpeak/iCall/etc...

Why the fuck does Cisco need to it for publicity? Its not as if they are a nobody, they already have a reputable brand name in the market. What Cisco is doing is right! Apple had no fucking right to lable their phone iPhone when they knew beforehand that Cisco had a problem with it.
Cisco is not to be fooled with & or bullied. I mean jeez. The only other two companies in related fields that are as financially healthy are Microsoft & Google. With Cisco I believe uncontested at #3.
So if Apple wants a fight. They picked a doozie of an opponent.

Well Cisco may have owned the rights to the iPhone name first and already sell
products with that brand, but it looks like Apple thinks their lawsuit is "silly."
http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-6150982.htmlI can't wait until they're forced to change the name of it.
