Apple Inc. has been granted another six days to respond to Cisco Systems Inc.'s claim that its new iPhone mobile handset infringes on a Cisco trademark.Cisco said late Thursday that it has agreed to give Apple until Feb. 21 to file its legal response in the month-old case.
In a statement, Cisco said Apple asked it for a second extension after the initial extension ended Thursday and the company complied. Cisco said earlier in the day the two companies continue to hold discussions in an attempt to reach a settlement to the dispute.
"Cisco is fully committed to using the extra time to reach a mutually beneficial resolution," the statement said.
On Jan. 10, Cisco filed suit in U.S. District Court claiming the iPhone infringed on a trademark it obtained in 2000 with its acquisition of Infogear. The company markets a phone with the name through its Linksys division.
The suit came on the heels of Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs' widely anticipated unveiling of the touch-screen iPhone at the Macworld trade show several days earlier.
Apple has called the suit "silly" and points out that other products use the iPhone name.
