Apple has launched a version of its web browser Safari for Windows, competing head to head with Microsoft's Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox. Chief executive Steve Jobs said Apple "dream big" and wanted to expand the 4.9% market share Safari enjoys. Mr Jobs was speaking at a conference of developers for Apple products in San Francisco, California.
He said Safari was "the fastest browser on Windows", saying it was twice as fast as Internet Explorer. A test version of Safari 3 for Windows XP, Vista and Apple Macs running OSX, is available for download from the Apple website. Apple is hoping to replicate the success of iTunes, which has proved enormously popular on both Macs and Windows machines.
"We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari," said Mr Jobs. Mr Jobs used the conference to lift the lid on new features of its forthcoming operating system (OS) for Macs, called Leopard.

Something amusing just happened to me....as I got to about 70% of the download for Safari completed, IE7 "stopped working," closed out, restarted, and went back to my homepage. I wanted to get a screenshot, but it disappeared just as I was about to hit the key.

You know what? I'm actually excited about this.... Haven't a clue why. Maybe I'm bored of WIE and I dislike like FF.

huh, interesting... I don't think I'll be using it as my main browser, but it will be handy for testing pages that I'm developing.

Have you tried Opera lately? It's really good.

Not really. Since every version of Safari in past versions of OSX are locked to the version that came with it, you can't use Safari for Windows to predict how anything will look in anything except Safari for Windows (and presumably Leopard).

It looks nice and loads/runs quickly enough but feels like Firefox Lite and lacks some features that would make it better.

Click to view attachmentI'm getting this on Vista Ultimate. No, not in safe mode and most everything else has installed correctly.
Mine will start to load the toolbar (ill see it heh) and then it'll crash.
Here's my error info... Don't know if its useful.

@cork1958: Some setup probably screwed up the installation of the Windows Installer service, so try manually starting the service and see if it reports a problem (e.g. dependency issue).

LOL, put Apple software on a platform with more than 3% userbase, and BOOM! - security flaws found! Who would have predicted THAT?
I was doing more research on my crash problem - info about it hasn't populated search engines too much but there are folks posting on apples support forums about the crash issue i had and other types of crash issues.

Messing with it some more, I really don't think many Windows users will be running this as their main browser. In fact, are many Mac users really using this as their main browser? It seems like they would be using FireFox or Opera.

Yeah... From the video's ive seen displaying safari's features, it doesnt seem like it really has anything up on firefox. Tab's, Click and drag tabs to open in new window, built in customizable search box, handy organizable bookmarks...
But I want to test out the claim Job's made about Safari's speed. Plus, i like to use different brownsers from time to time just for something different to look at - at least its different from my usual firefox.

What is Bonjour?
Simple Setup
Safari, Apple’s turbo-charged web browser, uses Bonjour to find any web addresses on your local network — for printer, router or webcam setup and administration, for instance. With the help of Bonjour, iChat AV lets you see which people are available for chatting or video conferencing on your local network, and automatically removes them when they leave. iTunes and iPhoto also use Bonjour to facilitate sharing music and photos on local networks.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/seems sorta like a shell extension similar to what IE has... in a way... or something heh
btw, let me know what you think about it. I still havent been able to run the bastard

edit: been looking around on the net for various safari problems and it seems like for some people, this thing crashes all over and is wayyyy too buggy. But its a beta so...
I've also read that Safari is basically konqueror with a static UI, i wonder how credible that is.
For me it's slower than Opera, IE & FF combined.
Might try it again when it's final.
yeah, there are some people reporting good things about safari's performance, but there is noticeable buzz on some boards about quite a few flaws.

I use FireFox like it's a religion, even on my Mac mini, but Safari's probably the next best in my eyes. I'll probably try this Windows port out at some stage.

Nope. Have found that it's the old problem of running this stuff on an older AMD machine.
There was another security update for my installation of safari tonight. It was noted as a security update - then safari worked for me. I imagine they must have fixed that coregraphics.dll issue.
Cool. anyway - i tried it out - nothing special lol. sticking with FF.
edit: I gotta say, safari loads IEX noticably faster than FF for me. Interesting.

Opera is, and has always been, the number one browser without any competition. Complete freedom...
I really dislike Safari, at least on Windows. I haven't tried it on OSX, so I can't say for sure, but it's very slow and who the hell wants to use that awful user interface?

I agree Opera is king.

Used to think Opera was king ever since way back in the version 5 days. Not anymore though. Personally, I think it's gotten way to herky jereky surfing the net and flat out to many sites don't work in it anymore whether it's the sites fault or Opera's.
Have to say the browsers are all about the same anymore, depending on your own flavoring. Only one I have to admit I can't stand, is Firefox though!

I've always liked the simple, plain approach of anything too, such as Safari.

Opera is pretty strict about following web standards, so I'd say that usually it's the web site's fault. I like Opera though. It's a really good browser. I wouldn't put it way ahead or way behind of the other choices. There are really three "good choices" for web browsers (I wouldn't call Safari a "good choice" right now).
I have all three browsers on my computers, and I use IE7 the most. It's just my choice. IE7 has all the features I need, and it feels more in-place with the Vista theme.
As for Safari... well... It's no longer on my computers. A few weeks ago I got so angry at Quicktime that I banned all Apple software from my computers. I'm not even running Quicktime Alternative, since it's basically a different interface on top of Quicktime. What made me so angry was when I started seeing Quicktime update windows appearing on different peoples' computers, and by default trying to download "Quicktime+iTunes." These computers don't have iTunes, damn it! Bunch of weasels trying to slip in their crappy software unnoticed...

Oh, I never have liked Quicktime either. The only reason I kept it was because every so often I would run across video files only offered in Quicktime format. But now, I simply won't play them (just like the Real Player files).

Yep,
Fed up with Safari already. Other than the size of it, which doesn't matter a whole lot, I can't stand how the favorites/bookmarks work. This thing is advertised as being blazing fast, even at startup. Hah!! Startup is slower than molasses in the middle of a Michigan winter! Poof! It's gone.
Now, down to just 2 browsers. K-Meleon and IE7.
firefox is good enough for me.
