Im just wondering what all you other IT guys have to do or get for being on call?
do you even have to be on call? if you are do you get some extra money even if you dont have to do any work? if you do have to go in what do you get for going in?
I think IT is a great place but way under appreciated and when it comes to being on call even more so.
My company recently asked (told) IT they wanted us to be on call, with no OT, and no bonus for being on call. Luckily we all said NO! and gave them a list of things they would need to do before we would consider it...
$200 just for being on call per week, even if we do nothing at all.
min 3 hours at time and a half if we have to do anything(even if it only takes 5 minutes), and if we go over that 3 hours its still time and a half.
all expenses paid; for example gas if i have to drive into work and food, if i have to leave an event like football game, tickets reimbursed...etc.
personally i think that sounds reasonable what do you guys think?

My place gives out £60 ($120) if you have to go in or not.
Been on call three times never got called. That was £180 for doing nothing (although alcohol is a no no).
I think you are expecting a little too much. I could see gas not being paid, and reimbursment for tickets? haha right.
Everything else seems fine. Minimum 3 hours is a good idea, and the $200/week sounds good too haha.
Describe what you do for your job and it may make a bit more sense.

ya i wasn't to sure about the tickets thing...
but i think the company will pay the gas.
So my company has 4 IT staff, one of which is me, and we all do everything that is IT (servers, network, user assistance all that kind of stuff). We are spread across a few provinces and we have a bunch of retail divisions that run through the weekend and later then the average work day, when there is no IT staff around. Nothing special... but its good to know we are not completely out to lunch...

Spoiled people! I'm on call 24/7 except when on vacation, for no extra pay. I'm third down the list, so I don't get called in all that often - maybe 3 times a year. Last time was during a killer wind storm that had knocked power and data out all around the city; that was a fun time to be driving in at 2 AM to make sure the generator came on.

Me too, except (smaller company) there is no one else on the list so I'm on can during vacations also ... Which is why I'm such a fan of both proactive maintenance and remote acess.
