Ok its been probally a year sence i've been here and i was jsut curious of a few things. I've recently bought two laptops and i am having a wireless question..... I take my laptop to my highschool and i get all these signals from certain points in the school but i can't seem to access them. they say they are unsecuried but when connecting the signal is reject.....can explain why? and possibly if there is a way around it??

These could be subscription wireless service only; or the wireless routers are configured to only allow approved Mac addresses.

The routers can be set up to accept only MAC addresses, which are the set of unique numbers assigned to every network adapter.

As a security measure, many places require the wireless device to be pre-approved to connect. One method of doing that is a MAC address filtering.

Also, often times a signal can pop up, but not be strong enough to connect to. I've had that happen many times.

Well... How about finding the school's NetAdmin, and asking them for access. Because we're not going to help you hack into the school's network.

you don't aquire the network mac address. The mac address is on your NIC card. (on your computer)

The network admin has to add your MAC address to the list of allowed computers. At this point in time, if your network admin won't permit it, you're SOL.
