Full Version: Port Triggering for IM services

Life was easy before..I forwarded all my needed ports to my computer, and all was well.
Now, my wife, for some silly reason, wants to talk to her mom and cousins who don't live nearby via IM and webcam chats...

So..from my admittedly limited understanding of port triggering, I set all my ports to trigger to the identical ports inside my network.

basically
Triggered Port Forwarded Range
Application Start Port End Port Start Port End Port
MSN FileVoice 6891 to 6901 6891 to 6901
MSN IM 1863 to 1863 1863 to 1863
AIM 5190 to 5200 5190 to 5200

Am I doing this right? Will anyone inside my network be able to use the video/IM functions of the programs?

What happens if 2 people (my wife and I) try to video chat at the same time?

I suspect it may depend on your router. On mine The only port I have forwarded is the one for uTorrent. I did not forward any of the ports for MSN Messenger yet all computers on my network are able use the features built into msn messenger.

Same here. I have an old SMC Wireless B/11 router. Same scenario as you. MSN video and audio have always worked fine even on my newer Linksys N router. But I always have to forward the port for uTorrent on both. What router do you have DK?
