These fine folks have finetuned an automated vector process.

This means that it's all mapped out by mathmatics, which means it is infinitely scalable. it is a helluva lot of work by hand, and it's rather frustrating.
but with this (very) easy to use website, you can get a better vector than tracing it in illustrator.
with these examples, no further photoshopping or retouching has been done. I find it pretty impressive.
