Full Version: Toshiba Quits the HD DVD "Format War"

Toshiba said Tuesday it will no longer manufacture HD DVDs, effectively ending the long-running battle with the rival Blu-ray for a dominant high-definition format.

Toshiba said it made the decision to cease developing, manufacturing, and marketing HD DVDs after "recent major changes in the market." It promised to continue offering support and service for all existing Toshiba HD DVD products.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," Toshiba President and Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida said in a news release.

Toshiba's HD DVD business has been suffering recently with a string of major retailers and rental companies announcing their preference for Blu-ray, developed by Sony. Video Watch video on the battle of the formats »

Last week alone, Wal-Mart and online rental company Netflix said they would abandon HD in favor of Blu-ray. Last month, Warner Brothers Home Entertainment -- which had been the largest media company releasing videos in both formats -- announced it would offer DVDs solely in Blu-ray.

The DVD battle has been reminiscent of the VHS vs. Beta fight in the early 1980s. It has left many consumers confused and waiting to see which technology will emerge as the industry standard.

Sony's Blu-ray is backed by Disney, 20th Century Fox, MGM, Dell, Panasonic, and Philips. Toshiba's HD DVD is backed by Paramount, Universal Pictures, Microsoft, Sanyo, and NEC.

Toshiba said it would continue to work with those companies and study ways to collaborate with them in the future.

Tens of billions of dollars have been at stake as major movie studios battled for a dominant format. But rival game consoles have been part of the struggle, too -- Sony's Playstation 3 plays Blu-ray discs, while the Microsoft X-Box plays HD DVDs.

Both Blu-ray and HD are high-definition DVDs, the successor to ordinary DVDs which show pictures only in standard definition. But Blu-ray and HD involve different hardware and are not compatible with each other, meaning consumers have had to decide which system to invest in.

Both formats have an excellent picture quality with a large storage space. But Toshiba has lost the battle because it lacks a retail presence in many markets, said Carl Gressum, a senior analyst at Ovum, a London technology consultancy.

"They didn't manage to bring on board some of the China vendors, they didn't bring (on board) the retailers, they've failed to develop in the European and Asian markets," Gressum told CNN.

Warner Brothers announced its decision to drop HD DVD right before last month's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a significant event for corporate buyers. Gressum said that led to an immediate drop in retail support for Toshiba's format.

Gressum said manufacturers of both formats have made things more difficult for retailers by forcing consumers to make a choice between the gradually-dominant Blu-ray and the much-cheaper HD.

"They're losing money in many cases because of the price war between the two formats as Toshiba -- and also Microsoft, to a certain extent -- has been playing the price card for HD DVD players," he said.

Toshiba said the company would continue to market standard DVD players and recorders.

Ahh where are all the HDDVD sales?!?!?

I gotta pick up some cheap movies. I'm still glad I bought it. Eventually, I will get a PS3 for Blu-Ray, but for now I'm picking up all the deals I can on these things. They still play! They still look great.

At least the HD-DVD player still function as upconvertors and play the existing line of HD-DVD discs now and forever (however long that may be given electronics' life-time these days).

Can't quite say the same for Blu-Ray with the upcoming October firmware release partially disabling some disc capabilities for existing players wihen new movies come out. Stilll a bad time to hop on the Blu-Ray bandwagon unless you get a supposedly immune PS3 console.
Devil McDunnough
it's sad to see HD-DVD go even though it's better than Blu-Ray in almost EVERY single way.
-Cheaper
-Region free
-Java enabled
-Picture-in-picture on ALL players
-Finalized standard

But on the plus side Tigerdirect.com is selling off there Toshiba HD players for $80 with 7 (2 in box+5 in the mail)free movies.

in other news, it's rumored that a Blu-Ray addon for the 360 is coming >.<
potterface
well toshiba still has a whole whack of blue lasers. can't they just be modified to play BD?
Taco Bell
Good question potterface. I would imagine so, but I don't know for certain.

Old rumor that keeps going around though Microsoft denied it. Though they were also vague about killing off their HD-DVD player until after it was repeatedly reported too. I doubt a Blu-Ray player is going to happen before at least the third quarter of the year if it happens at all this year.

br for 360 won't happen this year. they'll focus on their core market: games.

can't believe so many here bought into HD-DVD. BR's victory was (almost) clear from the onset to me. ps3 was / is bound to be succesful. their strategy worked. can't blame them really.

haha he's just happy he didn't waste his money on another 'betamax player.' lick.gif

haha. i do love sony's products indeed. I think they are well-engineered and all. I always have liked Sony. I worked for them, got fired and still like Sony products.

yet as a matter of fact potter, i have none of the next gen consoles. i wait for PS3's price to come down (and my house to be renovated - quite a money pit it is).

then also, 360 does not interest me: 1° its release is utterly mismanaged engineering-wise and after two years STILL is unstable and 2° the games on the platform are just not what I seek (almost all are way to violent).

about the latter: none PS3 game currently announced really interests me either, but I know someday jewels like Ico or Okami are more likely to appear on PS3 than they are on 360.

singh: which part of my initial comment is err "fanboy"?!

I agree. I love my wii. I love the games nintendo has released for it. and a few third party titles aren't too bad. it's just the legions of cheap, slapped-together sport/carnival/party games with crappy graphics. Wii sports did this to show the functionality of the hardware. and it's created this 'excuse' for third party developers to pump out all sorts of games with crappy graphics.
For the first time in the four years it's been since I sold my xbox, I wish I didn't. I really could go for a game of Halo. or any game that is a little bit darker and maybe bloody (*gadzooks!*), and get this, I want to play it ALL BY MYSELF. It's getting harder and harder to be an electronic sociopath because of the big N. sad.gif
Nintendo did doa great thing by getting really young people and older people playing again, but these people's standards are pretty low when it comes to games. SMB3 still knocks my dad's socks off. I just wish nintendo would satisfy it's fans they already have instead of impressing the guppies with card tricks.
oh yeah. fix your online too Nintendo. (you say you have a plan, now do it) and allow (at least) usb-hdd support. 512megs hardly cuts it for ram nowadays, forget storage.

edit: it seems I've detoured from the topic. oops.
